I have finally decided to eliminate one or two schools. I really appreciated everything they have done for me. Is this a good letter?

Dear Mr. XXX:

This is John. I hope the admission season was fruitful... I hope you, and your peers, had fun throughout the season and can toast to a wonderful year to come.
After much consideration my family and I have decided to turn down this offer of admission to St. Pauls school. I have gleaned much from this process, and what it has provided me will carry on through my college years. I appreciate everything your committee has provided me with, and I feel that I am better equipped to deal with many of life's endeavors.
It was difficult to rule out a school of such caliber, but we have decided to for a number of reasons. We felt as if [insert school here: Milton, Andover, or Exeter] "clicked" with many of my interests.
I look forward to convening with the St. Pauls' athletes at a sports event or the lawyers at a mock trial competition.
I would like to reiterate my thanks for everything you and your peers have done. I give you and your family sincere regards for this warm season to come.

Lol I wouldn’t waste my time reading all that if I were them. Well thought out letter …but short and sweet seems to work every time… It’s not a science really.

SPS doesn’t have mock trial. They have MUN and debate, though.

TMI and wordy in my opinion. Thank them for the acceptance. Tell them you have chosen to attend another school (name of school if you have decided) but you appreciate the acceptance.

Also, you do not need to start a letter with “This is John”. They will know that by your signature at the bottom.

I imagine they read the first sentence…then skip to where they see the school name. Write down your name and school your going, then delete e-mail. They just want to know the numbers and statistics.

Most of our schools included a stamped card with Yes I will attend or No I will not attend.
You could just get a postcard and send it to them with the information. It works just as well.

Thank you for honoring me with the acceptance to St. Paul’s for the class of 20xx.

Lol does it really matter italian. Short and sweet and they won’t care. I just wouldn’t want my time to be wasted reading what was originally posted.

BTW, principalviola, I do like your idea of a letter declining acceptance. Yes, you can send in the postcard and check off the box, but a personal letter in addition is so much better. It really is a small, small world and you never know when your paths may cross again. A nicely worded, personalized letter is always in good form.

For fun I should send an email to the admission office. “After much consideration I have decided not to attend SPS. It had admirable qualities, but it was not what we were looking for this year. A more detailed letter will be arriving shortly”.

I sent a letter in the snail mail and I actually got my signature scanned in… I’m trying to attach it to the bottom of an email. My dad always tells me, “Today’s acquaintances are tommorrow’s alliances.”

italianboarder - your dad is a smart guy! ;)

principalvioloa - I think you’re overthinking it. Send the snailmail, skip the email and be done. If SPS wasn’t what you were looking for this year, why did you apply?
