How Does This Work In College?

Hello Everyone. I wanted to know something. I have an incredibly strong love for foreign languages and I wish to learn 2-3 during my college career. My question is how does it work in college. In High school I would have only been able to take one (Spanish) which I did. In college am I permitted to take as many language classes as I desire, so long as I pay for the class itself? Will I be allowed to have more than 1 language class that I can learn at one time? Like I said I want to get 2-3 languages down during my college career, but I just don’t know how schedules work in college at all. Do they accommodate any specific classes YOU want to take (in my case foreign languages)? I’ve also noticed that colleges like Yale and Columbia offer the most languages than most other colleges. Being a student who plans on majoring in Architecture or civil engineering, but wishes to study several languages In college as well, will I be able to do this?

If you major in engineering and try to become fluent in multiple foreign languages, you’re probably going to be in college for more than four years.

Yeah I know

It depends on the university you choose to go to, whether they’re on a quarter system or a semester system, and what their GE requirements are. You may also have to complete a certain amount of Prerequisites in order to apply to your major, so you’ll have to give those courses priority. But don’t let all of this discourage you - if you really do love languages and you have a genuine desire to learn 2-3 before you complete college, you can definitely do it. Universities don’t put that many restrictions on you in terms of what classes you take as long as you’re not taking too many units (usually anything above 19). So, you can take two languages at a time if you wanted to and if your schedule permits it, or take 1 language per year for 3 years!

You might also want to look into doing study abroad programs over the summer that focus on foreign language, because that can get you ahead of they game!
