How does this work?

NYU Tisch is so complicated! I want to do musical theatre at NYU. Therefore, I want to audition for CAP21! On the website, I cannot see where you audition for it. Do you audition for Tisch in general and they just place you in different schools of tisch based on what they think your best at? Also, do I have to apply to tisch and NYU?
Thank you [:

Here's what you do:

You apply to NYU via the NYU application or the Common Application. You have your grades and transcripts and test scores and recommendations sent to NYU's admissions office. On the application, you designate that you are applying for admission to Tisch/Department of Drama.

Then, you watch carefully for when NYU's Dept of Drama allows kids to begin signing up for audition dates and times. (Kids who are applying ED are allowed to sign up first.) Once the audition enrollment opens, you get online and register for your time and date.

Re: the audition. You have a choice. You can designate/tell the auditors that you will ONLY accept a slot at CAP21, which is the only Musical Theatre studio at Tisch. (You can also do a musical theater major -- a BM, I think -- at Steinhardt. This advice I am offering applies only to Tisch.) Or, you can say that CAP21 is your first choice/preference, but if the auditor so decides, you would be willing to consider/accept another studio. You should research the various studios and have in mind one that you particularly like/fel drawn to, and you ought to be able to clearly articulate why you would prefer those studios.

In the spring, you will hear a decision from NYU as to whether you are admitted or not and if so, which studio you are in. Typically, you will hear you are in before you hear the studio. So if you hear you are admitted and chose ONLY Cap21, then you will know you are in at CAP21. But if you said you would consider another studio, you will have to wait a few weeks to hear where you have been placed. (It still may be CAP21, by the way.)

Does that make sense? If not, I can try again. :)

I have been super anxious to schedule my audition date, so I've been on the Tisch website pretty much non-stop for the past few weeks... it says that the dates will be available by the 1st, which is tomorrow (obviously).
What I want to know is if I'm not done the application yet (which i'm not), can I still schedule my audition? I'm applying ED and will obviously be done my application by then :)

Yes you can. Scheduling the audition is just reserving a time slot.

Does nyu tisch do rolling admission? is there any advantage in applying early descision?
thanks!

Tisch does have early admission. There statistically apparently is a slight advantage to applying ED, but if you need to worry about financial aid and to compare offers, there is a disadvantage because if you get in ED, you basically have to accept whatever NYU gives you.
