How does UCR's engineering department stack up

Is UCR's engineering department good compared to the other UC's like Irvine?

Combining Master’s and Doctoral for both Public and Private colleges of engineering in Southern California are:

California Institute of Technology Pasadena, CA 4.5134
Harvey Mudd College Claremont, CA 4.5000
University of California–San Diego La Jolla, CA 3.7622
University of California–Los Angeles Los Angeles, CA 3.68
University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA 3.497
University of California–Santa Barbara Santa Barbara, CA 3.3648
California State Polytechnic University–Pomona Pomona, CA 3.3013
University of California–Irvine Irvine, CA 3.0126
University of California–Riverside Riverside, CA 2.5231

Where did you come up with these numbers?

U.S. News & World Report engineering college rankings for the academic cycle 2009/2010. I combined both Doctoral and masters universities.

youmans14: (how did you come up with that name??)

The US Snooze rankings are a poor way to evaluate whether or not a school is right for you. I say that for a bunch of reasons but, let’s look solely at the underlying methodology the snoozers use. Here is their description of the methodology they use:

“The U.S. News rankings of undergraduate engineering programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology are based solely on the peer judgments of deans and senior faculty who rated each program they are familiar with on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished).”

The magazine would like you to believe they have done some serious research into each school they ranked. But if you look behind the numbers, you know that’s B.S. Instead of in-depth analysis, they send out some form to fill out. I just don’t believe that some guy sitting in his chair at, say, Duke, knows squat about what’s going on at Riverside. Never-the-less, he’ll probably score Riverside anyway.

My son is an EE freshman at UCR and he likes the place. They try keeping all the Engineering students together both in the classroom and the dorms. He likes the kids at the school, he likes the teachers he has, he tells me he is learning new things, and, in general, seems satisfied about how things are going. Mind you, I’m getting this from a kid who communicates sparingly.

My suggestion to you is to call and, if possible, visit each engineering school you are interested in. My impression is serious engineering students are a welcome addition to any of the UC’s

VERY IMPRESSIVE, Man, VERY IMPRESSIVE.
How about just compare the marks of your high school with Harvard? Maybe it is better!

This is suddenly very confusing…

younman14,

Mind all the idiots posting nonsense; I actually tried to answer your question. In any case, no matter what school you choose remember that,

“Engineering is not merely knowing and being knowledgeable like a talking encyclopedia; engineering is not merely analysis; engineering is not merely the possession of the capacity to get elegant solutions to non-existent engineering problems; engineering is practicing the art of the organized forcing of technological change. Engineers operate at the interface between science and society.” -Dean Gordon Brown, Professor Emeritus at MIT, 1962.

Calpolyenginner would really love to have you think calpoly pomona is ranked higher than UCR. Unless you forget the fact that CalPoly does not offer PHD in engineering, so the two schools don’t even belong to the same ranking. That ranking is pulled out of his own behind.

The Engineering program at UC Riverside is an up and coming program with a new $80 million dollar engineering building opening in 2010. The program is starting to win and get a lot of grants and awards > [Bourns College of Engineering: 2009 News](http://www.engr.ucr.edu/2009news.html)

The program is also ranked #62 on U.S News ranking.

I hope this info helps>

Thank you CalPolyEngineer, I’m sure your insults are greatly appreciated

Ok, my mistake. I do not… I repeat… I do NOT hate or am I trying to bash UCR’s Bourns College of Engineering! Just like with Cal Poly Pomona, UCR is victim of skewed, arrogant, pompous, and LA-centric negative portrayals. If anything, we should work together to enhance the two most prominent public colleges of engineering in the Inland Empire. Do I think a 2.5231 out of 5.0000 is fair for a college of engineering where I have personally seen engineers outperforming their UCLA, UCSD or Berkeley counterparts? NO! Do I side with the closed-minded arguments of a poor idiot and professor at UCSD who claims that the only way for the UC to become financially sustainable is to shutdown UCR, UCSC and UCM?

[Proposal to shutter some UCs hits nerve - California - SignOnSanDiego.com](http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/jul/19/1n19uccuts221810-ucsd-profs-say-some-campuses-can-/)

Heck NO! Do I hate myself because for a moment I contributed the propagation of those misconceptions. Yes.

I furthermore would like to reiterate that both UCR and CPP have suffered long enough from a self imposed bias from their respective university systems in favor of other elitist schools and we should not motivate this dialog. I apologized if I insulted anyone in this forum. I was wrong, I’m the idiot.

Ok, I respect that. You don’t need to apologize in that respect I guess.

thanks though
