Hi, I’m a Junior and I’ve taken the ACT twice and UT is my top choice school, but I’ve heard different things about how they use ACT scores for admission. I’m out of state
Here are my scores:
October-35 E 28 M 29 R 30 S 29 W (31 composite)
December-34 E 33 M 33 R 33 S…22 W (33 composite)
At first I freaked out about my writing score, then I saw on the score report that it was 80th percentile nationally, many people that I know also got a 22, and talked to different people about it and they said it really doesn’t matter that much. And on top of that, a girl from my school just got accepted to Natural Sciences at UT with a 22 writing, and she got a 30 composite.
I know for different colleges within UT they use your stats in different ways, but I’m applying to the College of Education which isn’t nearly as selective as some of the others. Should I take it again or just not worry about it? I’m very happy with a 33, and I really don’t want to take it again unless these scores will hurt me for admission. Any info or advice would be great thanks!
I have not seen an AI formula for College of Education but I would assume it is the Liberal Arts group. They use the sitting which results in the higher calculation for you. If your October score benefits you, they’ll use it. I am not sure you benefit from taking it again but it won’t hurt you to do so if you want to. Have you tried the SAT? I hesitate to suggest it since it is a mess but they use the score that helps you the most and the SAT formula rates class rank more heavily than the ACT formula. If your rank is high, that might be the way to go.
My school doesn’t rank. Yeah I looked at PAI, I would say it’s probably 5 or 6 for me. Is ACT EngComp English, Reading, and Writing, or just English and Writing?
@pschnee I believe the EnglishComp is a combination of your English and Writing score. Your original post says that you got a 34 English score but 22 Writing. Is the Writing correct? Seems very low given your English score.
@K20903 I’m really confused…the ACT Writing score is just writing alone. I got 22 on that and 34 on english. First time I took it I got 35 on english and 29 on writing.
@pschnee Sorry I am being confusing. The ACT gives you a combined English/Writing score and a subset essay score from 2 to 12. The ACT uses your English score and the essay score to arrive at the English/Writing score. I think what UT uses in the AI formula for the EnglishComp factor is the English/Writing score but as noted above by @gettingschooled have not seen that definitively.
