I'm planning to take some math classes either at a community college or VCU. I'm hoping to complete multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations with at least a B.

Are these classes an advantage to UVA? Also, I've taken most of the honors core classes offered at my high school (for my grade level), which, ironically, does not include Algebra II honors.

I don't mean for this to be a chance thread, just how favorably/disfavorably UVA looks at these courses.

I dunno if it makes a difference in admissions, but I am in diff eq right now (took college calc during high school) and the credits i am transferring in are very helpful, esp to my math major. i do think there is a maximum of 2 courses that can be transferred for the major, though, so watch how many you take (major starts postcalc - ie diff eq, lin alg, etc).

i've also heard that the calc classes at uva are killer, so it would be good to get them out of the way. BUT be careful about community college courses - they might not transfer as the same course. look it up in the transfer credit analyzer thing before you waste your time. i took my math classes at a somewhat prestigious university in the area and they transferred, while a spanish 101 class i took at the local community college transferred as a pre-101 level class. also, do you want a community college as your base of this higher level math? i did not think so.

good luck with it all!

calc 2 is very suicidal in UVA and you have to work your butt off 100% to expect a DECENT grade. The math profs here really suck ass.

Calc 2 isn't bad if you don't suck at math and if you do the problem sets. The average grade is generally in the B range, but somehow a myth has been propagated that it is the most failed class at UVA.

It is, however, a dismal class that is generally not well instructed. Test out of it if possible.

No, the average is between a C and C+ actually - thecourseforum indicates that all but one class has the average grade of a C+ or below - and this is speaking from the most recent available which was taken from Fall 2005. I don't suck at math - in fact it's my strongest subject - but the content is too much and you generally are forced to memorize a lot of the concepts; it is the math course in my life, apart from IB Math HL, where I had to spend lots of time practicing problem sets. And it's MATH132 we're talking about, not some (easyt) applied calculus class.

The median grade for most sections is B and the average for most isn't lower than 2.7, which is a B-. I agree with you, though, about the class in general. It sucks.

Is calculus 2 the second semester of "Calculus with Analytic Geometry"?
