Well, my counselor told me that our school reports weighted GPA's to all colleges, and since UVA does not re-calculate, I was wondering how they account for inflation.

A 4.0 at a relatively easy HS would still look better than a 3.8 at a harder school.

Do you look at SAT scores to back the GPA's up?

I believe they judge GPA based on the scale given to them by your school and also by looking at your class rank.

They certainly look at SAT scores, but I don’t think they look at them to judge your GPA, as I know that there are plenty of people with high GPAs and average SAT scores, and vice versa. Success in one of these areas does not necessarily mean success in the other.

Every admissions person I spoke to, at the several schools we visited, said that they don’t try to compare GPAs from one school system to another. My son had a 3.8 after his soph year; at his cousin’s school, with the same classes and same numerical grades, he’d have had a 4.3. I think the admissions departments are professional enough to know something as basic as this.
