How Does Wait Listing Work?

i am kinda confused on how wait listing works…
if ur wait listed… they let u know after may 1 if they will grant ur acceptance
but by may 1 u have to let ONE of the colleges that u were accepted to if u wanna go
therefore, if the college that wait listed u decides to accept u after may 1 what do u do?
because u already told another college (the one that u were accepted to) that u were going to attend their college in the fall

you put down a deposit to the school you were accepted to. In the summer you iwll find out if you get in from the waitlist. If you do then you may attend that college, but the deposit you put down for the other college will be a waste.

exactly
why would you waste that much money
so basically when youre wait listed... it means youre not going

well if you get waitlisted odds are they won't end up accepting you anyway, but if you really want to go to that school then the $500 or so deposit will be worth it. And, some colleges will refund the deposit from the other school if you get in from the waitlist (I know Virginia Tech for one does.).

I know someone who was waitlisted for UChicago, his dream school last year, and deposited at Hopkins.

Later, he learned that he was taken off the Chicago waitlist. He lost his Hopkins deposit but he's a lot happier in Chicago.

Well it really depends. For example, at Notre Dame, 572 were on the waiting list (I believe this number is 2-3 years old, but it doesn't change much year to year), and 25% were admitted. That's worth staying on the waitlist if it's your 1st or 2nd choice. At Haverford, 167 were placed on the waitlist, but only 7 were accepted (4%), so it depends on the school.

I was waitlisted at my top two schools. (northeastern university, massachusetts college of pharmacy).

And does anyone know how do you actually notify the school you've deposited if your off a wait list? in writing?

anybody know???
