well...i got the waitlist mail today :-/. what i don't understand is don't you have to tell colleges where u are going by may 1st? does that mean i'd have to send a deposit to, say, duke? and then if i get in by waitlist later, i don't know it doesn't make any sense. also, does anyone have any stats on prior year waitlist acceptance? thanks...this is a crappy week cya all

waitlist=a more polite way of rejecting someone...sorry.

thats so cruel insecure!

does anyone know how many people roughly are put on the waitlist?

linkin06: you should enroll to a college by may 1, but you don't have to take your name off the waitlist. if princeton decides to admit you later, you can then defer your enrollment at duke or some other school for a fee (i think its around $160).

If the yield is lower than expected, then they will take students off the waitlist. They accept more students than spaces available, knowing that every student will not attend. However, if it is less than predicted, the waitlist comes into play. It's like a warped version of purgatory where you're more likely to end up in "hell" than "heaven."

bahhumbugger and linkin06: I didn't mean to be cruel but its true...yield almost always works out for top colleges like pton.

um as a princeton waitlister myself, it says on their own dang letter that it depends on the year. last year was 0, but two years ago 99 waitlisted kids were added. if that's not significant I don't know what is; it basically means there's a wildcard admission chance of 0 to around 30%.....

are you saying that the # of waitlistees is ~300?

If so, that seems like an unusually low number for Princeton; you'd think they'd have more, just in case? MIT, for instance has 389, and it's a bit smaller than Princeton.

I'm just guessing, but I suspect that many applicants offered the waitlist will decline, either because they don't want to drag it out, or because they have a sure thing in hand (Yale, etc). So the actual number that join the waitlist could be hard to predict.

Here are some numbers from the common data set:

2005-6
Number offered waitlist: 1207
Number accepted waitlist: 794
Number admitted from waitlist: 0

2004-5
Number offered waitlist: 1045
Number accepted waitlist: 719
Number admitted from waitlist: 79

2003-4
Number offered waitlist: 471
Number accepted waitlist: 298
Number admitted from waitlist: 27

The numbers for recent years seem ridiculous given that Princeton's entering class is only about 1200 students.

VTCor ~ Where did you get these numbers? The waitlist letter from Princeton say they took 99 from the waitlist two years ago...

When I say "where" I mean do you have a link? Thank you for the numbers.

see the stickied thread on the front page of princeton section.

Google on Princeton, then search within the results for Common Data Set. That will take you to Princeton's own website where the numbers are posted.
