How Does Work Study Work?

In my financial aid award, it says that I'm eligible for a $2800 Federal Work Study .
I was wondering, then, does this mean that I will have to pay that $2800 in the beginning of the year and then earn it back if I want to during that year?

No. If you get a WS job, then you get paid a paycheck the same way you would at a non-WS job. You can choose to use that money to pay off school expenses if needed but generally it is used for day to day expenses.

Contact your financial aid office if you don’t know if your tuition and fees and housing are already covered by your other aid.

Usually you will find a work-study job where you put in 10-15 or so hours a week and the money is paid to you to use for expenses.

You might want to find out if jobs are posted ahead so you can start applying for them ahead of time, before they get picked over.
