how does your high school rank students?

I know my son's high school ranks students. However, I don't know how they do it. Is it GPA? weighted or unweighted gpa? Thanks.

Will

Mine doesn't rank at all.

depends on the school. you might as well ask them, and not us.

FYI: mine used the weighted GPA

We have both unweighted and weighted rank!

Mine doesn't rank either. It does, however, provide colleges with a histogram distribution of weighted GPA's, but as jenskate said, it varies between schools.

Oh we don't have a histogram, but we have a profile with grade distribution (just listed)

Mine doesn't rank at all, or even give out official GPA's.

By the district's Bright Futures weighted GPA. (it's different from the basic one, it's always lower :( )

Weighted GPA.

For regular classes, A=4.0, B=3.0, etc.
For AP classes, A=5.0, B=4.0, etc.

They also factor in any summer school courses or courses taken at a university.

Mine does it by weighted gpa.

My grade is on the "old system", class rank points. Class credits (labs cost 6, as they run into lunch; the rest cost 5) times the level (different points for Honors/AP/IB, Advanced, Academic, Studies) times your grade (points for A+, A, etc).

The grade after mine goes to weighted GPA, and eventually the school will stop giving out class ranks.

Ours ranks with AP classes worth 6, honors 5, regular 4. They include every class, including arts, PE and driver's ed, which are all regular courses and can bring down a GPA. One PE and arts class is required. Several years ago our #2 kid missed #1 because of driver's ed. Since then most kids near the top of the class take driver's ed from a private company to keep it off their transcript. (You have to pay for it at school too, but it's a little cheaper.)

Generally the top 10 or so kids all have straight A's, and the difference is number of AP's and honor's classes taken. If there's a tie, they look at number grades.

Unweighted, but they don't count classes like gym, chorus, band, and art.

decile system based on weighted GPA (last year, 4.17 and above = top 10%, 3.97 -4.16 = top 20%, etc, etc)

My school ranks by weighted GPA but on an unusual scale: AP classes are up to 4.6 for a 97-100, 4.4 for 94-96, 4.2 for 90-93, etc. Honors classes start at 4.3, and regular at 4.0.

Tiers, not by percentage. Its a new system at my HS, so nobody's really sure what it really means right now.

by weighted GPA

Mine uses unweighted cumulative GPA.
