how does YOUR school's GPA work?

Here's how mine works (UNWEIGHTED)

A=4.00
A-=3.66
B+=3.33
B=3.00
etc.

(WEIGHTED --> FOR HONORS CLASSES AND APS)
A=4.66
A-=4.33
B+=4.00
B=3.66
etc.

Just another point (if you guys know please include this) the avg. GPA (w) to get into ivies is 4.15 approx. at my school

I think UW is the same as cliche's, but at my school we DON'T WEIGHT. idiots. our valedictorian is going to be ridiculous.

Mine is exactly like WeNECStudent's

My school's scale is typical:

a= 4
b= 3
c= 2
d= 1
f= 0

Then, we weight by adding .025 to the average for each honors class and .05 for each AP class.

Example: Say I am a freshman with 8 classes who got straight a's and is taking 4 honors, 2 ap.
4+4+4+4+4+4+4+4= 32/8= 4+.025+.025+.025+.025+.05+.05= 4.2 (Sorry if you think this is a ridiculous explanation, but people never seem to understand it. BTW, we have a 4.8 GPA cap).

Unweighted
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = o
Weighted, AP and Honors is + 1 except for Fs

our unweighted is like WeNECStudent's school. weighted, however, is much more generous:

Honors +1
AP +2

so the highest possible number of points you can get for a class is 6.33 for an A+ in an ap class.

and for schools with unweighted like mine, do anyone of you find it odd that UW gpa's can be greater than 4.0? like when colleges ask for my gpa out of 4.0, it seems odd (not to mention pretentious) to say 4.21...similar situations?

Holy Crap...

hmmm...hopefullybright, does your school do that weight thing to the cumulative gpa? like at the end of the senior year, if you have taken 10 ap classes for all of high school, do they add 0.5x10 to your final gpa? interesting.

colleges only look at your UW GPA I think from your transcript and put it against some difficulty factor based on how challenging your school is/how rigorous it is..

I'm not sure if that's totally right but I know that they re-assess your GPA (obviously, because all schools do it differently)

Anyway its always confused me on these threads cause everyone compares GPAs with eachother...but its on different scales! This is very interesting to see! Thanks

No weighing, out of 100.

My school uses the 100 scale, which converts like this to the 4.0 scale:

95 - 4.0
85 - 3.0
75 - 2.0
65 - 1.0

with .1 increments for each point. My 98.46 goes out on transcripts as a 4.35.

AP grades are multiplied by 1.05
Honors grades are multiplied by 1.025
Regents grades are multiplied by 1

A=4
B=3
C=2
D=1

AP Classes:
A=5
B=3.75
C=2.5
D=1.25

Absolutely NO APs and NO HONOURS/ACCELERATED COURSES
Public School in Canada (w/ hard-marking teachers)

A = 86+
B = 73~85
C+,C,C- = I don't exactly remember

We do not count GPAs, but I'd assume that colleges count them for us since we show the letter grades on transcripts.

a= 4
b= 3
c= 2
d= 1
f= 0

nothing for honors, every class is straight up.

OK, get ready.

Honors/AP (at our school, Honors are as rigorous as AP, but don't happen to have the test at the end)
A = 9
A- = 8.7
B+ = 8.3
B = 8
B- = 7.7
etc.

Curriculum I (the equivalent of Honors at many other schools)
A = 8
A- = 7.7
B+ = 7.3
B = 7
B- = 6.7
etc.

Curriculum II (equivalent of CP at most other schools)
A = 7
A- = 6.7
B+ = 6.3
B = 6
B- = 5.7
etc.

One of my favorite things about our system is that it is so radically different from the standard 4.0 and variations that no one could ever even think to compare it to other schools' GPAs. That's a good thing.

Our PE classes and most of our electives (except for serious, demanding electives like Advanced tech-voc classes, music, and arts) are unleveled and don't count in the GPA. I don't understand why other schools don't do this.

Most students take classes at more than one curriculum level. Top students take a mix of Honors and Curriculum I. 8.3 or 8.4 is the typical cut-off for being competitive at top-tier schools.

a=4
b=3
c=2
ect

NOTHING for honors

1 pt for AP

A=4
A-=3.7
B+=3.3
B=3
B-=2.8?
C+=2.3??

yeah and no weighting....so our vals a little ridiculous....

Who's val isn't?

UW:
A-/A/A+=4
B-/B/B+=3
C-/C/C+=2
D-/D/D+=1
F=0

Weighted:
AP:
A+: 5.3
A: 5
A-: 4.7
B+: 4.3
B: 4...
Honors:
A+: 4.8
A: 4.5
A-: 4.2
B+: 3.8
B: 3.5...
CP:
A+: 4.3
A: 4
A-: 3.7
B+: 3.3
B: 3...

90-100 A
80-89 B
70-79 C
< 70 F

My high school still operates with the vestige of the old non-weighting system. It didn’t start weighting grades until the Class of 2006, and even then, it was only for determination of class rank. The weighted GPA does not appear anywhere on the transcript. Indeed, a student will not know it unless he asks for it.

The administration really doesn’t know how to offer the right incentives.
