How early is early?

I don't know a ton about Rolling Decision strategy but I'm from out of state so I've been advised to apply as early as I can. I'm not really sure what that means though. When do they start taking applications? When do they review them? I'm trying to decide whether I should take the ACT again before applying. I got a 29 the first time but I might need financial aid so I've been told that's another reason to apply earlier. I might be able to get in with a 29 but will a higher score give me a better chance of getting aid? I was interested in the Honors college but I am not sure if I'll get in right now. I might wind up having to qualify (if I'm even accepted) while I'm at school.
If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated :)

Students actually fill in applications at summer sessions and if I remember correctly, decisions start around the first of October. However, for the purpose of scholarship consideration, early is before November/December.

Scholarships are definitely numbers driven, but I do not know the ACT/SAT conversion. For SATs, most people posting on here have around a 1450 for CR/M scores.

The honors college is different at Pitt than other schools. Even if you are not eligible to take classes when you are accepted, you can appeal and once you have a semester of classes, your GPA helps you get into honors sections. Honors is based more on interest at Pitt. And for some majors honors makes more sense.

So when I visit in early August I will be filling out the application there right? Does that count for my whole application or can I submit an essay and letters of recommendation later?

If you need Merit Aid or scholarships and you’re interested in the Honor’s College, sign up to retake the ACT as soon as you can, because you need at least a 32 on your ACT to get into the Honor’s College (lnik: [Course Eligibility](http://www.honorscollege.pitt.edu/about/course-eligibility.html)) and therefore recieve aid from them.

I’d say that you’ll be okay applying no later than the end of October. But definitely improve your testing score.

Also note that the Honor’s College does not currently give out aid to students past entrance into freshman year. This means that if you don’t get in now (when you apply) but do later (say sophomore year) they won’t give you a scholarship for sophomore year onwards. They only give them to admitted freshman as they are admitted.

Thanks a lot for the info.

we fill out the application during the summer session!!??
how about the essay?

You may fill out an application. It is not required.

The Pitt application is very basic. In addition to filling in the application, you will of course need to send your SAT/ACT scores and school transcript. Pitt will also consider supporting information that you wish to submit, such as teacher recommendations, personal essay, and activity resume. The essay and resume can be emailed to Pitt. I would recommend that you have all information sent in by Oct. 1 and you will likely get an anser within 3-4 weeks. [University of Pittsburgh: Undergraduate Admissions & Financial Aid](http://www.oafa.pitt.edu/freshadm.aspx)

There is an online application on Pitts’ website,is that the only thing I need to do ? to fill out that application?

and thanks for the information

stanley- read my last post and the link there will take you to the pitt admissions page which describes what additional information is required besides the application, and what additional supplemental information can optionally be provided.

By the way, for the people who apply in the summer (when/if they visit) definitely send in supporting material (essays, teacher recs) if you want/need merit aid. They use the supporting material along with your stats to determine who gets how much aid.

DS filled out the application during one of the summer visits. Back then, it was free if you applied after the visit was over (do they still do that?). He sent in his essay, SAT scores and transcript later. He did not send any recommendations. It worked out as he received a full tuition scholarship :)

It was free last summer. Just used a code they gave out at the summer session.

I sent in my application yesterday along with my essay, and mailed my resume this morning. Is that too early?

I don’t think it is too early. Be aware, however, that they won’t review your application until it is complete-that is, until all the required items are received by the school such as your SAT/ACT score and school transcript. You can send your test scores now if you want to- but I expect that you’ll have to wait until the fall to get the school to send your transcript.

pamom is right AND the earliest decisions go out in late September or early October. Kids with stellar stats hear the quickest and some others seem to wait a while.

How stellar is stellar for the university of pittsburgh?

My guess is above a 2100 Composite SAT (1400) or like a 32 ACT composite with a high GPA (3.7/3.8+ UW). Basically, my guess would be definite Honor’s College material kids are going to be the “stellar” stats kids.

My daughter heard very quickly two years ago (4.0 UW and 1560/1600 SAT). I would agree with AwesomeOpossum on GPA, but I think stellar SATs for two sections is over 1450 now. The kids I refer to would also be applying and being accepted to top 15 colleges.

Really? I just assumed it was still 1400 since that’s the cutoff for Honor’s College right now. Although I’ve been out of the SAT loop for 4 years now…so who knows :)
