Everyone always says apply early to colleges. But how early is that? Does that mean within a few days of the application being available online for submission, within the first month? Someone please enlighten me. Thanks. :)

Early Action/Decision deadline =Nov.1st

Anything past that is Regular Decision

Applications received early often get more attention, as there is not yet the floodgates of applications coming in. I would say early means within of month of the application going live. And getting everything in early can also be an advantage. So plan ahead with regards to letters of recommendation, guidance counselor reports, score reports, etc.

I’ve been wondering about this too. Is there such a thing as too early?

For some colleges, it is expected that if you are really serious about the place, you submit your application far before the RD deadline. Examples which come to mind include URochester and Claremont McKenna (which wanted apps by 12/15 last year I believe in order to be considered for their scant merit money).

My son made it his business to get apps in by the end of Oct. even tho he was applying ED to his first choice. Most of the schools took the Common App so it was not such a big deal. He held off on sending in anything we had to pay for - like the SAT scores - until we heard from the ED school. The ducks were all in a row in case he wasn’t accepted. Having gotten that far would have made it very easy to follow thru with everything else that would’ve had to be done.

Fortunately, we heard from his ED that he was accepted so he then withdrew the others. He did get accepted to one of the state universities before they got the withdrawal.

My advice is to start on your essay early and write and write, then edit and edit some more.

Alrightey. Thanks to all for your input.

so there’s nothing wrong with waiting till the second week of aug. to apply, so that it’s not a mess getting transcrips sent off?
