How early is to early?

I am currently taking classes at a community college towards an Associates in Pre-Engineering which I plan to transfer into Mechanical Engineering. As of right now I have it planned out where I can get a majority of my classes done at the CC, so I am not set to transfer until the Fall of 2016.

My question is, would it be smart to start looking into options for when that time comes? Personally I want to try and get a clear idea of where I am heading, just for the sake of motivation and to help cut down on stress. I know I am not going to know for sure if I can get into a certain school or not until I apply closer to transfer time. But is it a good idea to start speaking with schools, and finding out what they look for in a transfer student for the area I want to go into?

At my CC the Pre-Engineering degree is set up to transfer automatically into Arkansas State University. But I am really wanting to try and see what other options are available within Missouri. The really enticing part of ASU is that even though I am in Missouri, I get to pay in-state tuition due to so agreement between Missouri and Arkansas for the area I live in, and that it would be cheaper than a school like Mizzou and Wash U here in Missouri.

So should I start looking into all my options a few years ahead of my time to transfer out?

I recommend that you begin looking into all of your options. There is no harm in being aware of what you want!
