My daughter is just finished up her junior year of high school and wants to apply early to Pitt Nursing. She will be taking her SATs and ACTs both for the second time in early June. Can she basically apply as soon as we have her test scores? She won't be taking them again, as we are cautionly optimistic that she will get accepted even as she stands now. Not sure how early is too early!

You can apply as soon as the application for 2011-2012 goes live. I don’t know about nursing specifically, but usually the regular application goes live sometime in August. Good luck!

There isn’t a special application for Pitt Nursing. You fill out the Pitt application and if admissions is willing to admit you (and you’ve listed Nursing as your intended major) they then review your application for acceptance to the Nursing program. It is possible to be accepted into Pitt and to be denied/wait listed for Pitt nursing.

My daughter filled out her application before the end of August last year and was accepted on about the 30th of September. Good luck!

I remember that my daughter filled out her application during one of the visit events over the summer between junior and senior years. If you visit, be sure to take all of you test data so that you can fill out the application right there. They waive the fee, too. You could even get the application online and fill it out at home. Then, when you visit, it will be easier to just transcribe the info onto the new/current form.

Good point about applying in conjunction with a summer visit, my son did the same.

Something else to keep in mind is that you’ll need the official transcript sent by your daughter’s high school. My son’s high school wanted to mail all the official transcripts for all their students at the same time–in early October. That meant that even though S filled out the Pitt application in August, his file wasn’t complete and ready for review until October. So you may want to talk to your high school counselor and find out when they will send the transcript.

Also, the essay and letter(s) of recommendation were optional this year, but S chose to submit both. If at all possible, my advice would be for her to do the same. Nursing is a competitive program, and essays and letters of recommendation really are her chance to shine in a way that no standard form or test scores will make possible.

sorry for adding onto this thread (i didnt want to create one w/ the sm question)…I was wondering if the same applies to applying to pitt’s school of science. like when should i apply if I REALLY REALLY want to go to pitt?

^^^
Pitt uses rolling admissions. Regardless of which college within the university that you want to attend…EARLIER is BETTER. Sept 1st is a very good target date.

I think the application becomes available over the summer, so apply then! ASAP! I know kids who applied with similar stats to my daughter, but applied much later and got assigned to a branch campus. D got into main campus and heard very early.

Applying early not only gives you a better chance, but also makes perfect sense for someone whose heart is definitely set on Pitt. What I mean is that you may choose to delay applying to other schools until after you hear back from Pitt–and the earlier your file is reviewed, the earlier you’ll hear back. Then, even is something goes wrong and you are rejected, you still have time to apply elsewhere since the vast majority of schools don’t have rolling admissions and typically give you until Jan 1st to apply. However, if you do get accepted you’ve saved yourself the trouble and expense of applying to all these other schools.

But again, keep in mind that a complete application requires more than just the application form. In particular, be proactive and ensure that your official transcript and test scores get sent in as early as possible. And if you want to submit letters of recommendation, ask your teachers early. They may like you very much, but chances are they have more students–and other responsibilities–to worry about, so they need time to write a great letter.

Best of luck to you all! By asking these questions and starting this process during your junior year you are already ahead of the competition :)

klfrech, I don’t know if if you can really go by stats, but D had a 4.0 gpa (honors classes with a couple of B’s) and between 610 and 710 on the various SAT sections.

wait soo if I apply early (say around september) when do I hear my results?? and also, say if I get accepted, do I HAVE to go there? so like is it like ED where i am binded to go

Since Pitt has rolling admissions and no ED, your acceptance would not be binding. There are others on this board who could answer your question better than I can about when you would get your results. My D got her decision about a week after submitting her app, but she didn’t apply until end of October. I’m not sure how early Pitt begins reviewing apps.

TomisMom has given excellent advice to all prospective applicants. The only thing I can think of to add is that NOW is not too early to approach teachers on whom you’ve made a good impression to write a recommendation letter. While Pitt does not require these letters for admission, they are highly encouraged for scholarship consideration and may also be helpful for a borderline applicant.

so like it is like EA.
The first results come out at the end of September and Pitt continues to review apps every week or two and usually notifies you within 30 days.

I think we heard in the very early fall, shortly after senior year started. It was nice to have that option and it relieved a lot of stress. If I can find the letter, I will post the actual date we heard. I am fairly certain that nobody was admitted over the summer months since you have to submit a transcript and your high school would have to be open to get it. Still, they definitely said that earlier application is advantageous. Maybe they review them in the order received???

I am really sorry for adding on another question but: If I don’t get in September, can I not apply again?? because if it is like EA I can apply early, and apply again id I don’t get in

You cannot reapply again if you are denied admittance. However, if something changes with your application (mid-term grades, new SAT/ACT scores) you can ask admissions to “reconsider” your application. Without knowing your stats it is impossible for me to predict your chances, but IMHO it is unlikely that you will be denied that early in the admissions cycle. I think it is more likely that you will either be accepted or deferred. One thing for sure…If you don’t apply you will NOT get accepted and earlier is better for applying. Good luck!
