How easy is it to change majors at UCLA and UC Berkeley (from history to communicati

I will take all the pre requisites at Santa Monica College for communication(media studies) majors for Berkeley and UCLA.
im plannig to apply as a history major because i've already took 4 history classes at SMC and got an A for all of them.. (done with history pre req's)

Is it hard to switch to communication once i trasfer Cal? I have a 4.0 average as for now done with IGETC by spring, will have 75 transferable UC unit.

Fall 2009: - NOW
Math52
English2
History 12

Winter2010:
Communication1
Speech5

Spring2010:
Psychology1
Sociology1

this is my plan to fulfull both UCLA and Cal's prerequisite for communication major by spring semester.

please let me know thank u!:)

I know that UCLA is impossible because its a very highly impacted major there. As for Berkeley I’m going to guess its probably not possible as well. Transfers generally cannot change majors after transferring (someone correct me if i’m wrong.)

^ From what I read changing your major is discouraged for transfers, but if it’s a NON-Impacted major then they will allow it.

if you have 4.0 and complete all prereq’s, why not apply as a comm major?

I don’t think Cal has a communication major, it has something similiar called ‘Media Studies’.

The major is now called Media Studies. It is an impacted major. You have to apply within your first semester after you transfer, have to have a minimum GPA and had to have taken Mass Com 10. This is all listed on their major website. Hope this helps!

anyone know of global studies at UCLA? Why does it say on website that they require a “B” or better for glob 1? that seems pretty rough contrasting all the other majors in which they require a "C or better.

why cant you switch majors? your paying them to learn you should be able to learn what you want im sure with your grades you can petition fro a major change…

anyone know if i am actually right/ wrong?

You don’t actually transfer into a specific major in the College of Letters & Sciences at Cal. You petition during your first semester.

You would be incorrect, because UCLA admits you by major. So their offering you a chance to go to UCLA for the major you applied as. Also if you were just able to change majors that easy. I’m sure many people would apply as women studies or non-impacted majors so they could get into the school and then change to Business econ or Communication or other impacted majors.

You can change majors to a non-impacted one, but the other way is very rare.

^ this is all for UCLA.

johnny,

you say the other way is very rare------ so is it possible to do just not the easiest thing to do?

From what I’ve read over the years on this forum I think there were a few people who were able to change to poli-sci or majors that are impacted but not as bad as say Communication/Biz-econ/Psychology.

Best bet is to search through the forums.

and CalBear2009 said it best for Berkeley.

Is it possible to switch to a biology major at UCLA, even if you have all the prereqs done, but you were admitted into something else?

bumpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

transfer students: You are expected to declare a major in the area in which you have been admitted: biological sciences, humanities, physical sciences, or social science.

That’s from UC Berkeley official web site. In UCB you’re are accepted to a department and then you can choose any major in that department as long as it is not impacted and you have all the pre-req done. I’m myself applying to Peace and Conflict Studies but if admitted want to declare Political Economy.

SAME HERE!
I’m applying as a transfer to the Middle Eastern Studies program but if admitted am going to switch to PoliSci :)

from what i have heard. UCLA is almost impossible to change into a impact major. unless you have a “compelling reason” they wont let you in. If the major is not impacted then you just need your pre reqs. done then ur good to go.

HelloG, so I need a “compelling reason” to switch in an impacted major? So there is a possibility, even though it’s low?

It doesn’t hurt to try, right? But I wouldn’t apply there assuming it will be possible.

Yeah it happens every year. If you have a compelling reason they may let you. From what i heard, its pretty hard tho. You shouldn’t go assuming its going to happen, because it probably wont, but some do get lucky enough.
