It it easy to get a spot in upper-level accounting courses? Are you given priority if you minor in accounting?

It’s fairly easy for the upper division accounting courses as there is no actual accounting major at UCSD so you have less competition when registering. If you take a look at the current Spring 2013 schedule for the Rady School of Management (all accounting classes are filed under this department), you’ll see pretty much every upper division accounting class having plenty of room available.

You will not be given priority if you minor in accounting. How registering works in UCSD is by seniority (which is determined by how many UCSD approved units you have taken - approved units doesn’t mean it was taken at UCSD necessarily but approved by UCSD) and special cases which I’ll explain soon. And registering earlier means you can register for any class in general that you have the prerequisites cleared for and not just selected classes such as accounting.

Here is the order of people who can register from earliest to last:

Special Cases (basically people given special authority to register before anyone else such as UCSD tour guides or the handicapped)

Seniors (135.0+ units UCSD approved)

Juniors (90.0 - 134.9 units UCSD approved)

Sophomores (45.0 - 89.9 units UCSD approved)

Freshman (0.0 - 44.9 units UCSD approved)

Incoming Transfer students (this status is removed the next quarter after your admission and you will be placed accordingly to your units)

I was an incoming transfer student and I still got all the classes I wanted first quarter. Now I’m a senior and the worry of getting my classes or not isn’t even a concern anymore. Not saying classes don’t fill up - they definitely do however if you manage your time you generally can get the classes you need. Hope I’ve helped!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe veterans receive priority registration as well. This would fall under “Special Cases.”

Wow, that incoming transfer thing sucks! I’m a transfer student too. Good to hear that you got all your classes though… I just hope that I’ll be able to land a spot in intermediate accounting for fall quarter.

Would all of my prerequisites completed at community college be recognized by UCSD (as long as they’re articulated in ASSIST/UC transferable) so that I can immediately register in classes that require another class?

@USMC I’m pretty sure they do but you should double check with an advisor to make sure.

@hamlin Assuming UCSD successfully transfers your ASSIST/UC approved courses (sometimes they mess this process up) then yes, you can register for classes right away having the prereqs you completed already cleared for you.
