How easy is it to get to San Francisco?

There are people there that I might want to see somewhat frequently. Is this feasible?

I have read that it is inadvisable to bring a car, but why is this? If I am going to SF a lot does that make it worth it? Does it cost extra to keep it at Stanford?

Freshman aren't allowed to have cars on campus. You get get to San Fran pretty easily via caltrain/buses. It takes about 10 min to bike to Caltrain, about an hour on Caltrain, and then however long on buses to get where you want to go, not too bad. I know a couple of girls who visit their friends at Cal fairly regularly. Since San Fran is even closer, it's definitely feasible. That said, very few people go into the city all that often so you may not have a lot of company.

freshman can't have cars because of limited space, but i don't really think you need one. you can take the marguerite (free stanford shuttle) to the train station, and then pay 10 dollars for a round trip ticket to sf, it's pretty easy. freshmen don't go all that often, though, maybe 2 or 3 times the entire year. if you go to transitinfo.org, click trip planner, and type in caltrain palo alto for your origin and where your friends live for your destination you can get how much it should cost and how long it will take to make the trip on public transit.

"Freshman aren't allowed to have cars on campus."
That being said, I think it's also fair to say that some freshman DO have cars and have non-freshman buy them a parking pass.

It seems that upperclassmen go into SF more than freshmen.

Yes, Caltrain is pretty convenient (and the car thingies are really cool).

i think that under special conditions you can get a parking permit as well, such as if you have a legit job off-campus. a lot of RAs are really generous with lending their cars/driving frosh places and would probably be willing to take you to sf every so often too. i guess some people might illegally try to get a car permit off an upperclassman, but i don't know of anyone who has done that, most frosh bringing their car on campus that i know of (all from the bay area) just pray that they don't get a ticket...a few people have older siblings here with cars that they can share... it should be pretty easy for you to borrow a car from someone if you need to.
