I find it hard to believe that if I shoot a criminal who is attacking me, he will only be energized by the bullets and want to hurt me more.

Dude, I've been shot with plastic BBs from a low-powered air gun and still didn't feel the energy to fire right back. Imagine if that was a hot lead bullet.

And if you study the mechanics of bullets, you will realize they mushroom into a larger size on impact

And you still havent told me a better way to defend against a guy with a weapon threatening rape

Has anyone who was the victim of a violent crime ever said "I'm so glad I didn't have a gun?"

Has anyone who was the victim of a violent crime ever said "I'm so glad gun control laws are very lax?"

Has anyone who was the victim of a gun accident ever said "I'm so I didn't have a gun?"

dude, if a guy is threatening rape you dont have to shoot him!!!

pepper spray his eyes, maybe stab him in the leg...hell, just fart in his face! but no need to carry a gun around with you!

If you will be staying anywhere near a college campus in massachusetts you can forget the gun idea. It is illeagle to have any weapon on a college campus in mass and even pepper spray or mace can leave you in a lot of trouble. Unfortunately that's the way it is. Anyway, coming from someone who lives in the area, you won't need a gun for protection purposes, if you are recreational shooting you can rent at a shooting range, and you prob wont have much time to hunt.

"Anyway, coming from someone who lives in the area, you won't need a gun for protection purposes"

Which "area"?? There are PLENTY of areas in Massachusetts where a gun can come in handy.

I am an 18-year-old girl who lives in Arkansas. I work at a pawn and gun shop. I sell guns every single day. I fill out the NICS forms and call in the background checks. Any questions?

ever hear the tearm "Don't bring mace or a knife to a gun fight?" criminals have guns too.

Guns aren't permitted on college campuses, so you'll have to find an off campus storage facility, a range, and have a permit to carry the weapon in public since you'll have to transport it. Guns are pretty simple to get but it's not worth the hassle when you're in school. Some schools used to permit you to store your gun with police services but this has pretty much been done away with.

Quick lesson on massachusetts firearm laws:

Firearms and feeding devices for firearms are divided into classes. Depending on the class, a firearm identification card (FID) or class A license or class B license is required to possess, purchase, or carry a firearm, ammunition thereof, or firearm feeding device, or "large capacity feeding device."

As a nonresident, you can only be issued a permit if you plan to COMPETE with the firearm. Recreational shooting without the intent of competition is not a grounds to be issued a permit. The fee for the permit application is $100. A seperate permit must be obtained to purchase the firearm. Since you are international, you CANNOT carry a gun in the state of massachusetts without being issued this permit. You must also attend gun safety persuant to MGL Chapter 140 313P. The weapon must also be stored in a specific fashion.

I'm not up to brush on my purchasing laws in MA but I believe you need a specific purchase permit and walmart only sells hunting rifles here. All other weapons must be purchased through a gun retailer or direct from a manufacturer (such as smith and wesson, located in the western part of massachusetts).

As a matter of personal opinion, there are WAY too many yahoos out there who carry guns (many illegally) for "personal protection." Until we can guarantee that everyone will use guns safely and responsibly, and not just to blow someone's head off and be the macho tough dude, I believe in gun control. Intelligent, responsible people have no problems getting gun permits. But, funnily enough, those are the people that usually don't want them.

I have a gun and am trained to use it (been shooting since I was nine) but I don't think I could ever shoot someone with them. Never mind carry one around with the sole intent of eventually shooting someone with one. But since the original poster was asking about recreational shooting, let's just stick to that, okay?

"direct from a manufacturer (such as smith and wesson, located in the western part of massachusetts)."

Grew up blocks from there, hell even played soccer on their fields. Lovelyyyyy place! Very, Very Nice guns too.

My mother actually engraves firearms for Colt and for her own business. She's done a few S&W's

yep...I used to play some soccer on the smith and wesson fields...was always a little weird being above the indoor range...

their range is second to none as well.

Guns are permitted at Bob Jones U. They'll even store them for you :) (Keep in mind though that they don't even allow contemporary Christian music and the only movies you can watch have to be G rated).

why...do you want to kill someone?

Yes, because everyone who owns a gun is a murder/prospective murderer.

As far as I know there really aren't any areas anymore that a gun becomes useful. Mattapan, dorchester, jamaica plains, all have cleaned up pretty well and there is no longer a combat zone. I feel safe almost everywhere I go.

What about queens? Or any places you don't go

And yeah, no one is ever shot in Manhattan....

It depends on what type of gun and in what state.

I agree with hokegoalie on everything he's said.

I knew someone whos father owns a gun shop and hes a police man the girl knows how to shoot a gun she goes to the shooting range and she has worked as a clerk at the gun store she is my age..(not yet 18) ANd yes im pretty sure there is shootings in Manhattan...

I know once my aunt and cousin left the original house my cousin my aunt my dad and the rest of there brothers and sisters grew up to move to another bigger bronx house(they lived in a tiny apartment that was the top half of where they used to live) and 4-5 months later they found out theyre was a shooting in front of there old house..nobody was killed but they were in critical condition
