How easy is it to switch majors?

Relatively, how easy is it to “change your mind” on majors from your application? Say I selected that I want to do Global Business or something and then “changed my mind” come the start of the semester and wanted to change to Computer Science?

Depends on the school and their change of major policy.

At most schools, it’s pretty easy to make a major change. Often you have to get sign-off from your advisor and fill out a form (usually online). The ‘hard’ part is making sure that you can complete the major’s requirements in the amount of time you plan to spend at the college. That’s pretty easy if you are changing your major as a first-semester freshman; it’s harder if you are changing your major junior year.

At many schools, though, you do have to apply for the computer science major and/or complete certain prerequisites with certain grades before being eligible to declare for CS.

Agree, it depends on the school. If you have already applied then contact admissions and ask if they can move your application into your preferred major.

Once you get to college:
–Some colleges admit by major and one would have to be accepted into a different major.
–Some colleges admit by program/school (ex. business, engineering, nursing etc.) and one can change majors within the program/school they have been accepted into but would have to apply for an internal transfer to a major in another program.
–Some colleges allow students to change majors freely.
Note that when colleges admit by either major or school/program it may be difficult to switch from a less competitive major into a more competitive major.

E.G. At Carnegie Mellon if you are admitted to business you cannot change your mind and switch to CS.
