How easy is it to switch to another major in another college within Cornell?

Hypothetical situation:
A student gets admitted to CALS for some major. They realize they don’t like that major and decide to switch to CS (or any other competitive major) in the College of Engineering or College of Arts and Sciences within the first semester as a Freshman.

My question:
How easy is it to switch?
Are there certain classes that you have to take before you are able to switch?
Does switching majors depend on the availability of space in the competitive major?

“Does switching majors depend on the availability of space in the competitive major?” Yes, it is not automatic and transferring is competitive between schools.

Applying to CALS is not a back door entry to the other Cornell divisions.

Generally speaking internal transfers at Cornell are straight forward.

That said, I agree that CALS is not an easier admit or a backdoor to other colleges. Each of the seven colleges are very unique and are looking for the applicants that fit best. They are very aware of students trying to game the system so apply wisely.
