How easy to change Engineering Major?

I want to major in Engineering and work in the energy field. I figure my choices are Chemical,Nuclear and Petroleum engineering. However, I am not sure where to start. Does TAMU have a first year engineering program, and is it easy to change majors in your freshman year without losing ground?

Every freshman engineer is required to take "CBK classes" (Common Body Knowledge classes) in order to advance to their upper level courses. Their freshman year, they'd take these courses:

Calc. 1 & 2
English 104 (Freshman English)
Chemistry 107 (General Chem. for Engrs)
Engineering 111 & 112
Physics 218 & 208 (Mechanics and E&M)

Engineering 111 & 112 are the only differences between engineering majors. They vary depending on your concentration in engineering. You'd take Track C. These two classes would have to be completed before you can take your upper level classes, so yes you would be behind by changing majors. However, this isn't a huge deal. Often times people have to retake one or multiple of these CBK classes if they didn't pass them, or if their CBK GPA isn't high enough. So you wouldn't be the only one behind.

Each engineering major has a required GPA you must have before you can transfer to that major. I'd talk with a counselor and tell them your plans, and try and take most of the above mentioned classes so you won't get too behind.

Well, I'm kinda-sorta bumping an old thread, but anyyyyyway...

gstein, I'm taking up required coursework for petroleum engineering (less the ENGR111&112 courses: track C), and I just have a couple of questions. I've already contacted the university and have been re-routed a frustrating amount of times...not to mention been put on hold for 20 min+

I've been accepted for a while now, and am doing general studies, but I don't want to be behind everyone just because I can not take ENGR111&112 TRACK C for pet eng. I read how the mechanical engineering major has classes you may substitute for those, but I can't seem to find the ones I can sub. for track C O_O. It's too late for me to transfer into PETeng, major is full :o

What are the substitute classes for ENGR 111&112 track C? And, is it possible for me to test out of physics 218 with an AP test? (mechanics only)

Hope you can help, you're like wikipedia :p

EDIT: I just read that freshman are required to take PETE 201: introduction to petroleum engineering during their first semester! GAHHH. I'm going to be so behind, won't I be lost in sophomore level classes after I transfer to PETeng? I'll be missing out on ENGR 111,112, and PETE 201.

Yeah, my freshman year roommate was a petro (before flunking out to general studies). 201 is required for freshman petro. I’m not sure about track C, but I remember hearing that the class that could be substituted for ENGR 111 was ENDG (Engineering Design Graphics) 105 I believe is the number? I don’t know if this holds true for Track C because of the amount of chemistry involved in their intro ENGR classes.

Yes, you can test out of Phys 218 and even 208 with an AP Test score of a 3.

Don’t worry about getting behind. Try and take some of your core classes and get those done with. You have your KINE requirement, your UCC requirements, maths, englishs, etc. Most engineers tend to get behind at some point in their pursuit sadly. It’s just really hard to complete in 4 years, many take 5.

P.S. Don’t forget about taking summer courses, they can really help!

I got a reply back from an OAR helper. Asked the same things and got:

"In general studies, students will be able to take the same classes as majors in a particular field. You should not be behind in the required classes for your major. You need to schedule your New Student Conference as soon as possible. The longer you wait the fewer choices you will have.

woooooo!

You can take the same classes (physics, calculus, chemistry, english), but for your ENGR 111 and 112 classes you have to have been already accepted into the Dwight Look College of Engineering (e.g. you can’t be in general studies). Look under corequisites for ENGR 111:

The same may go for PETE 201, that I’m unsure of.

OH ffs… ****

What am I going to do now? I’ve been searching and searching but I can’t find ENGR111&112 trackC Substitutes :/

On a side note, A&M petro-engineering has really low SAT CR/M scores.

Call their department…

did…twice. Always seems that someone isn’t available >_>

Meh, w/e. I’m just worried about falling behind.
