<p>When my son came for a sleeping bag week-end, he met up with a professor who is not in his field of study; that professor was super warm and welcoming. Based on this interaction, we both came away with a very positive impression of CMU. But if my son actually attends, he would be in the CS field. How closely do SCS professors get to know undergrads? And how hard or easy or common is this? How helpful are the SCS department advisors?</p>
<p>I honestly think that CMU staff, regardless of which department they’re in, are always welcoming. I remember on my first day of college I wanted to start ahead and see what concentration I want to pick, I wandered around Gates building and randomly went into an office. The lady there stopped whatever she was doing and spent ~30 mins talking to me and directing me to people of interest. I was truly surprised and very motivated since then. </p>
