My S was accepted to Berkeley’s College of Natural Resources. He did lots of Environmental Clubs in high school. He did specify his Major as Environmental Science. We are out of states, so we need to pay out-of-states tuitiion. We are trying to find out how easy to switch from CNR to the College of Letters and Science if later on he changes his mind in his major. Since we are planning to out-of-state tuition, we want to be extremely careful. We did find there is form for transfer college to L&S. Also wondering if he meets all the requirements for transfer, what’s the percentage they will approve the transfer? Thanks a lot.
https://ls.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/advchangeofcollegepetition.pdf suggests that it does not look that hard, as long as the student meets the course and grade requirements listed and would be able to complete an L&S major in a reasonable time (8 semesters or 130 credit units). You may want to ask directly if you have any concern about whether there is a subjective or competitive evaluation beyond the listed requirements.
Note that some L&S majors have higher GPA requirements in major prerequisites to enter (e.g. 3.0 for economics, 3.2 for statistics, 3.3 for computer science).
Thank you! Good idea, we should ask directly, we will attend Cal-day, we will ask them.
Just an FYI - there are kids who transfer INTO CNR from L&S because it’s smaller and the counseling is reportedly easier to access and better (L&S is HUGE, vs. a couple thousand in CNR). Three of D’s friends - pre-med, integrative bio, etc. - transferred in after D (started in L&S) said she was doing it (decided on the enviro science track before she even started at Cal, so it was just getting the prereqs done). Point is, I’m sure that it wouldn’t be super difficult to move into L&S - depending on the major and the prereqs - but he may up staying put.
thanks for sharing the info.
As a follow up, we attended Cal Day last weekend so that we could see where D does her on-campus research (it’s the one day a year that they throw open the doors to ALL of the museums and other facilities and invite the public in) and to check out the CNR area since that’s where she’s at now. We met multiple CNR folks - counselors, professors, club members. Very nice and thrilled to meet a fellow convert. Much quieter area and less mobbed than the L&S area, for sure. And D has actually recruited 4 friends into transferring in, not 3 as first reported.
