The Bush family was powerful and influential dating back to the days of Prescott Bush - and sometimes those things count for more than sheer wealth.

FWIW, my H met and had a private meeting with Bush over a particular issue, and while neither of us are Republicans and were not fans of his policies, H reported that on a one-on-one basis, Bush was quite sharp, knowledgeable and well-spoken. He felt that he comes across poorly in larger public settings, but is articulate in smaller settings.

Re Post 20: GWB’s father was never a senator. He was a sitting congressman when GWB was admitted. He was also a former head of the CIA and chair of the Republican party. GWB’s grandfather, Prescott Bush, was a U.S. senator.

You could call GWB a developmental admit. You could even call him a celebrity admit.

It seems odd that his entire senior year is pass/fail.

Back in the early 70’s we used to consider above 650 good scores and above 700 got nearly everyone into HYP. Bush’s grandfather was a Connecticut Senator and he may also have been a bit of a developmental admit since by then his Dad was a millionaire. (He becomes a Texas congressman while Bush jr. is at Yale.)

Also the SATs were recentered in 1995. So his scores would be different now: a verbal 566 would now be 630-640, and a math 640 would still be a 640.
