How exactly do I get started as an independent?

Sorry. I was supposed to be going into my spring semester of sophmore year but my parents won’t pay for it. So I am on a LOA technically. so yes, i am a sophomore.

^^^

So, you’ve done THREE semesters at Allegany?

What were your classes and grades for your 2 semesters during frosh year?

What is your cum GPA?

What is your BCMP GPA?

How much debt do you have so far?

Mom2, I think this fall was the first term of the OPs sophomore year.

*I took ochem last semester, which was first semester of fall year. and my gpa starting out last year was a 3.2, then it fell to a 2.5 because I was an idiot. So med schools will see my grades from my last school? Should I just retake all the premed prereqs at a state school? What is the best strategy? *

OK…you have a larger problem because you have 3 semesters’ of classes and your GPA still isn’t strong.

Yes, med schools will see ALL grades from the college level no matter where you took the classes.

If you retake classes, they do NOT replace the old grades…they just get averaged in.

You can retake or take the “next higher” level courses and do well to improve your BCMP GPA and cum GPA. Do you have a state school that you can commute to?

how much debt do you have so far? I can see why your parents “pulled the plug”. They unwisely agreed to co-sign the debt when they thought you’d be some highly paid doc and easily pay back a huge amount of debt. Once your grades dropped, they knew that the risk was to THEM. That said, that’s too much debt for a pre-med anyway.

I think you should retake since it looks like your foundation is weak.

However, it just doesn’t look like you have the natural ability for these courses. Not everyone who wants to be a doctor can become one…the pre-req classes are hard for a reason…to weed out those who probably won’t do well in med school.

calc 1- A
Calc 2- B-
Chem 1- B
Chem 2- B-
Comm Arts class - B
Comm arts class - B-
Intro Bio- C (I could have got an A, I just underestimated the memorization)
Philosophy - B-

and I’d say i’m about 24k in debt.

I know my grades don’t reflect the ideal pre-med student, but I had some personal issues throughout these semesters and I know i can do better… I’m just looking for some options.

Don’t go into any more debt.

You need to DO better…not just KNOW you can do better. It is important for you to get the very best possible grades you can get.

Here is the issue I see. You have completed 1 1/2 years of college. Going to a community college will get you to the 2 year mark but really that’s about all you can do there.

I am a little confused…what exactly do your parents expect you to be doing between now and whenever you return to college? Do they want you to work, take classes elsewhere, transfer schools, or think of other major options? What is the plan?

*calc 1- A
Calc 2- B-
Chem 1- B
Chem 2- B-
Comm Arts class - B
Comm arts class - B-
Intro Bio- C (I could have got an A, I just underestimated the memorization)
Philosophy - B-

and I’d say i’m about 24k in debt.

*

You need to stop accumulating debt. Undergrads shouldn’t have more than about $30k total.

Yes, go to a CC or commute to a public. If you go to a CC, then you may need to go more than just one semester.

You need to decide whether you have what it takes to get into med school. Next semester, retake Ochem and see how you do. If you get an A and think you can do well in OChem II, then take that next fall You may also need to retake Bio.

You haven’t taken your Physics I and II yet. If you continue as pre-med, I can see that you could do 2 semesters there.

What schools are close to your parents’ home that you could commute to?

my parents want me to just stay at home and do work around the house and work for the family business… ill eventually go take classes at CC but the LAC is out of the question because they dont see the point of me going back because i messed up so bad.

i’m not sure what to major in either. i was supposed to be an ES major at my old school but now I feel like if I major in biology at a state school I wont stand a chance against other applicants. I was thinking about majoring in Economics so i have a back up career and so I stick out of all the bio applicants. Also my gpa will be boosted because econ isn’t that difficult.

Also the only school i can commute to is IUPUI. Its really cheap if i live at home. I cant commute to IU bloomington because its 2 hours away and my parents know its a party school so they refuse to let me go.

Economics will require you to work too. Regardless of what major you choose you will need to apply yourself and not underestimate the amount of work you need to do.

Maybe working in the family business while earning some money, and taking some classes part time will give you the boost you need.

IUPUI is fine … no reason not to go there.

Do you really want to go to med school? It’s really, really hard & you have to be really, really good at bio & chem. This is a very serious question: Do you really want to be a doctor?

If the answer is no, consider other options. Use this time to think about what you really want to do in life …

IUPUI is fine…go there!

*my parents want me to just stay at home and do work around the house and work for the family business… ill eventually go take classes at CC but the LAC is out of the question because they dont see the point of me going back because i messed up so bad.

*

Do your parents realize that if you’re not in school then you have to start paying back those student loans???
