How exactly does "Berkeley time" work?

So I've heard that classes at Berkeley start 10 min. after the original post time. Cool.

But I've got back-to-back classes. One class starts at 2 pm and ends at 3 pm. Then my next class is at 3 pm and ends at 4 pm. My main concern is if class starts 10 min. after the posted time, does it end by posted end time or 10 min. after that? This is so that I know if I can get to my next class in time. Thanks!

classes start 10 minutes after the schedule time, so if your class is at 2pm, it “officially” starts at 2:10pm! :slight_smile: it doesn’t work for ending time though, so your class would end at 3pm. Your following class would start at 3:10pm.

Oh, that’s cool! Now do classes ever go beyond the posted time in any unusual scenario? Such as finishing a test or a teacher finishing a lecture? And what happens if you go late to a class (maybe 5 min. late)?

Depends on the class. If it’s a big class (100+ students) they usually end right on schedule, since students get antsy and have other places to be. If it’s a small class (20-ish students) it’d be more likely to run late sometimes.

But Berkeley time is there to let you get from a class that ends at 3 to a class that starts at 3, yes. :slight_smile: That’s generally enough time, unless you have to get from Li Ka Shing to Haas or something crazy.

@failure622 - OK, so location is something I’ll need to look into when scheduling back-to-back classes. Thanks!

Wouldn’t it be easier to have the start time be as published, then end ten minutes before the hour?

yeah, but then there wouldn’t be a berkeley time! :slight_smile: Berkeley time is pretty annoying though since certain things like clubs and real life sometimes don’t follow Berkeley time

@MaineLonghorn‌ That’s what Stanford does.

Most classes will end by the posted time. If you need to leave on-time in order to get to your next class, sit closer to an aisle and the doors so you can leave quietly in a less obtrusive manner. If you have to leave early on a regular basis, you might want to speak to the professor directly and let him/her know beforehand. Be aware that some lecturers don’t like people leaving early and say important stuff right at the end of lecture.

This chart gives an estimate of how long it takes to walk between buildings on campus:

When I had back to back classes that weren’t close by, it was helpful to have a bike to get across campus faster. There are some areas that are pedestrian only where you must walk your bike.
