I know the decisions come back next Friday, but I'm curious as to how exactly the process works.

Will they send an email with the decision or will I have to check the My Yale Status page? Will decisions be up at a certain time on Friday, or will they be available on an as-they-come basis? Will they send out a tangible packet in the mail, and, if so, when?

“Single Choice Early Action applicants to the Class of 2017 may check their admissions decision online once decisions are released in mid-December. Click the Early Action Decisions link below and login with your Eli Account information. An Eli Account is necessary to check the decision on your application, so please be sure that you activate your Eli Account. You should receive information about activating your Eli Account two to three weeks after you submit your application to Yale.”

Following on-line notification, admitted students receive a package in the mail with admission letter and a few other things. They also will be able to access “Blue Marble”, the admittee Website, which will show all other admittees (who want to participate) by geographic breakdown, forums, and other information. Deferred and rejected applicants will also receive mail: a physical copy of the letter they were shown when notified.

BTW, I noticed a time yesterday when the Yale application web pages were essentially simple text. I conjecture someone was testing turning off the stylesheet downloads to facilitate processing during the high-traffic time. If the application site looks a little funny next Friday evening, this will be the reason.
