how expensive is the food at UW?

Dear all,
Hello, i am an international student going to UW this fall for class of 2013. I plan to stay on campus and thus, i would have to select a dining plan. I chose the cheapest one, i.e. bronze dining plan which means on average on day i spend around USD9.6. I wonder how much food can that amount buy me? How much does one bread cost?
Thank you very much.

Here are some links to menus from places you can eat on campus to give you an idea of prices:

hello spideygirl, thank you very much for all the links you provided. very helpful indeed. now i have a better idea of the food prices there…Thank you;)

iwantivyleagues: There’s a lot of grocery stores around there, like safeway. (google it) And it is not that far from the campus. Maybe about 10-15 minutes walk. Depending on your housing area of course. I plan on going there a lot myself. And I chose the gold plan.

G0 WITH THE BRONZE PLAN if you live in the dorms! you can always add money to your husky card which can be used anywhere on campus if you run out of funds. if you do not spend all of the money on your dining plan, they keep the leftovers. i work for hfs and i see students come into the express markets with hundreds of dollars left on their dining plan at the end of the year that they won’t get back.

shertas199: how does the husky card work? Don’t you have to use your own cash for the husky card? wouldn’t it be better for students who received lots of scholarships to go with the better plan? I mean, I received tons of outside scholarships and if that pay for my food too, I wanna use it that way, I think.

You can deposit cash into the Husky Card or transfer via credit card. You won’t eat at the dorms all the time (there’s the ave, uvillage, and free food occasionally…) and you can always add money, so I’d advise against getting anything other than the bronze dining plan. IMO I’d use scholarship money to buy textbooks, and to deposit into your husky card when you run low on food money.

thewu: When you say deposit cash, does that mean our own cash from our own checking account? All my scholarship money go to the school, tuition & room and board so I thought I take advantage of it by going for the gold plan. This way I fork out less money for food from my own pocket. Well, that’s my reasoning unless they give me the scholarship money to buy my books. Cuz I feel like I have to pay for books from my own cash.

If it’s your money, take the bronze plan – there’s absolutely no reason to spend more. If you have a full scholarship, it doesn’t matter which one you choose, obviously.
