One of the schools I'm interested in applying to is 19 hours a way by car. This saddens me because I'm interested in going there but I'm not sure if I could ever make a college visit there and that the price of going home between holidays would be to much. How far are you willing to go for college?

Any place within the US is fine for me. I don't really care about the location. I'm applying to a place in my town as well as places on both coasts, rural and urban.

go for your dream...im going 1100 miles away to NYC

I would go to a college far from my home.I live in New Jersey and I would gladly go to a school as far out as California, but I would also go to a school in New York.Ditance away means nothing to me.

It also depends on your parents' likings. For example, my limit was 8 hours away (Case Western)... However I will be going 6 hours away (Rochester). I really had a difficult time with my mom allowing me to go to Cleveland. Although when you go to college you are going to be an adult, your parents still have a large influence on your decisions. I wanted to look at Vanderbilt, however since that is many many many hours away, my parents refused to let me apply there. Just see what your parents say. My mom had the argument for not allowing me to go far that I would not be able to come home during Thanksgiving.

My parents really didn't care how far i go...i applied to schools an hour from home (lehigh) and schools much farther away (colorado school of mines) ...i live in pennsylvania by the way (an hour from philly and NYC) but i applied to my dream school--Vanderbilt--which is 13ish hours by car. my parents were fine with this and it's where i will be for the next four years. i really think "too far" is defined by how far your parents are comfortable allowing you to go. I always talked about going to college in Cali so going to Tenn. was a relief for them but i also know a high school friend at Vandy right now. but go along with what your parents think is best because they often know! ;)

also there are cheap flights you can find! (if you decide to go far away)

One thing to consider when looking at schools that are far away is how close you are to a good airport and whether it is possible to get direct flights home from there. My daughter is looking at schools across the country, but she has found that while one school in a state can be close to an airport with regular flights home, others in the same state can require a two hour drive to get to the nearest airport --- making them "too far away" in her mind. Her goal is that any school she ends up in have an airport within an hour and reliable transportation to and from campus to the airport.
We have also looked at fares on travelocity to see potential flight costs from various parts of the country --- two schools can both be 1,000 miles from home but have very different airfare costs.
