how far to coffee shops and the like ?

from campus? I know it is in the city, but can one stroll outside campus for some nice places to study with a little background nice like comofratble coffee shops? how far is other night life like bars ?

movie theater?

play houses?

btw, does MAc put on musicals on campus?

Coffee:
Dunn Brothers, 1569 Grand Ave–across the street from campus
–with live music most nights
Caribou Coffee, 68 Snelling Ave. S–across the street from campus
Cahoots Coffee Bar,1562 Selby Ave–6 blocks from campus
Cosmic’s Coffee, 189 Snelling Ave. N–6 blocks from campus

A little bit of more of a walk but recommended:
Espresso Royale, Fairview and Randolph–about 8 blocks from campus

Clubs and bars:
Many restaturants within easy walking distance. About a zillion within easy biking distance.
[Restaurants - Macalester College](Restaurants - About)
Some of these feature bars and music, but I can’t evaluate them for their “night life”. Of course there are clubs, especially in downtown Minneapolis (10-15 minute drive), but I can’t really give you advice on this.

Movies:
Grandview Movie Theater (two screens–independent) is located at 1830 Grand Ave (0.5 mi west of campus) has newly-released movies. Check out the website for showtimes and coupons.

Most convenient “cinemaplex” probably is at Rosedale Mall (AMC, 14 screens), about seven miles but directly connected by the 84 bus that runs up Snelling Ave right by campus and terminates at the theaters. Discounted tickets are available to Mac students.

Play houses:
See list on right [Art, Music, and Theater - Life At Mac - Macalester College/url. Of these, Steppingstone (children and youth orientation) and Penumbra (African-American) are probably closest to Mac (approximately 1.5 and 2 miles away, respectively). I believe all these are within the two cities (not suburban) and most reachable by bike or bus, especially those just across the river in the residential neighborhoods of Minneapolis.

Musicals at Mac:
Sorry, can’t answer this one authoritatively. It does appear that musicals are scarce in the last five years of productions:

thanks , descartz, for a through reply. so DT MNeapolis = 10-15 drive. Is there public trans options to get to DT?

or in general , how is the public trans system there and is there some sort of bus or train one can get to DT from campus?

…or a bus or train to get to shopping/malls? is there public trans to mall of america?

to what extent do you need a car?

related … how late do any on campus coffee spots stay open?

how late does the library stay open?

Read the last link I posted to get some sense of what is involved in navigating the Metro Transit system.

Bus system is pretty good and can get you to within a few blocks of most places in the city limits and inner suburbs. Light rail is immature – one line from DT Mpls to Mall of America (and the airport) is running, a new line between DT St. Paul and DT Mpls will open next year. That would be the way to get to DT from Mac (84 bus will intersect this). Until then there are several bus routes that go to either DT that branch off of 84, including bus 16 which runs between DT’s.

The need for a car depends as much on when you want to travel as where. During the weekdays most major bus lines run frequently and its fairly convenient to get places. On nights and weekends route frequency decreases and a car might be welcome. Bikes will be dependable from September to mid-November and again start again in April.

Can’t say about hours. I’ll bet the library posts its hours on the Web.
