This website seems pretty straight to it and based on the posts and responses I’ve seen, I just wanna clarify I’m not trying to show off my stats or anything like that. I’m just trying to get a measure of where I stand in the college application process for a school I want to attend. These are not exaggerations but truthful statistics of my high school career. Also, our admissions counselor has to go through like 100 Asians named Nguyen before she reaches me and its gonna be close to Early App due dates, so here I am.
So, right off the bat, I am an Asian Male, Senior, Georgia Born and Raised.
Academics:
GPA 4.0 weighted, the school is lazy and reports an A as a 4 and such, whether it’s an AP or a regular class.
Unweighted GPA would be a 3.984 *
SAT:1440 M:750 R:690 W: 7.6.7
ACT: 30
APs:
I have taken a total of 8 APs so far in my past years and am presently taking 4 more, coming to a total of 12 APs.
APs are Human Geography (5)
World History (5)
Chemistry
AB Calculus (4)
US History (4)
Computer Science A (3)
Physics I(4)
Lang(3)
Lit (Not taken yet from this point on)
American Gov and Economics
Psychology
Biology
Extracurriculars: I’m not a leader in any of the clubs because I don’t like to suck up or deal in my school politics just for a fancy officer position on a college application. However, I do take initiative as a member, helping newcomers learn they’re way around while the officers are busy getting their PR campaign going and taking pictures.

Your GPA is great, your AP scores are as well. However your EC’s are poor and uninspired, as well as your SAT/ACT scores being a bit low at least for Emory.
Good luck
@MDN2001
I go to Emory, I’m from metro ATL as well. I would say EC’s that correspond to a potential major and to things that truly interest you on an deep emotional level. I hope I didn’t discourage you, A Reach doesn’t mean impossible, you should still go for it, It’s not like your applying to too many schools. And you have a good shot at Oxford.
How are EA’s binding? ED’s are binding. The key is going to now be your Essay, what you want to study, and how it ties into your EC’s. What do you want to major in? For example, true non stem majors at GT are not as competitive.
Just looking at my daughter’s Naviance for Emory and GT would have me lean toward your chances being greater at Emory.
11/14 applicants with SAT over 1400 were accepted at Emory vs 10/18 over 1400 being accepted at GT. The average was 1440 at Emory and 1480 at GT.
2 of the 3 at Emory had GPAs UW below 3.5.
@Cavitee Naviance is only numbers. That does not account for extracurriculars, essays, LORs, interviews, which state, etc. Also, Naviance takes into account statistics from several years ago. Emory has gotten even more competitive. They have an average SAT of 1470. Georgia Tech, for in-state students, also has an acceptance rate of 37% versus Emory’s 18.5% acceptance rate. That is literally double the odds.
Actually, it’s the last 5 years.
All 5 students that applied last year were accepted and none of those were ED. I appreciate the fact that it doesn’t account for EC or rigor.
But to say Emory is a Reach and GT is Match based on what MDN2001 has presented above to me seems a bit inaccurate.
I would also look at Emory’s SAT average. As they allude to in their own press release the SAT score is “based on SAT scores and ACT equivalents.” This was before the new concordance table was released so those scores are skewed to the high side especially considering they had more ACT submits than SAT. (All from Emory’s CDS)
So they converted the 33-30 ACT to SAT scores from the old concordance table and averaged them with actual SAT scores. That 33 now is between a 1480 and 1450 and the 30 is 1380 - 1360 vs 1510 - 1490 and 1410 -1390 before. So at a minimum a 30 point difference on average.
This is no way a condemnation of Emory as a school, it’s a great school and in my daughter’s top 3. But they have misrepresented their data before… http://news.emory.edu/special/data_review/index.html
I believe state colleges are free in Georgia for in-state, is that right? In that case, I’m not sure why you would put Emory into the mix…unless your goal is to stay in-state for family reasons (which is fine), i would put one group as state choices (i.e. free) and then broaden my search for private universities (i.e. paid)…other than location, what about Emory appeals to you?
My son’s large GA suburban high school is seeing the same thing @Cavitee. I have wondered if Emory’s in-state acceptance rate must be higher than their overall acceptance rate because students are getting into both Emory and GT at very similar rates at his high school. Regardless, it is worth a shot for the OP to apply and good luck.
@Cavitee The SAT scores that I am talking about are from this year’s applicant pool. It does not take into account previous years. Also, the CDS is not for all admitted students. The CDS is for students that committed and will be attending Emory, so the SAT and ACT scores are bound to be lower on the CDS. People are going to go to Emory if they are below average and got into a high ranking school. Also, just because all the people from your daughter’s school got into Emory does not mean that everyone on here will get in. Just for reference, from my high school (very competitive) only two of the eleven got in this year.
@Cavitee
Lol, if that makes you feel your daughter has a Better chance at Emory… Fine. From what was presented here, Emory is a Reach for OP. Emory is known to have favorite schools throughout GA, due to familiarity. Those confounding factors cannot be assessed as we don’t have the data, and your Naviance data from your specific highschool does not suffice. What we do know is Emory’s instate acceptance rate is Lower than its OOS rate, and vise versa for Gtech. I can look at my Naviance
from my highschool in Gwinnett county GA and assure you that it easier to get into GT from my school.
Edit:Also, most Emory students submit the SAT instead of the ACT, so if Emory said a 1500 equivalent, then that didn’t change much regardless of concordance tables.
