I'm applying to Columbia College regular decision. Here's the stat rundown:

1570 SAT (800M/770V)
800 IIC, 800 Writing, 790 Chemistry
240 PSAT
4.0 unweighted, rank t1/230ish (I think there are 3 or 4 of us tied)
5 Calc AB (highest my school offers, though i'm independent studying BC), 5 US Hist, 5 Lang/Comp

National Merit Semi-finalist
AP Scholar

Moderate ECs:
Scholar's Bowl Captain (numerous MVP and all-star awards)
Concert, marching, jazz band (all-state band and orchestra throughout high school, section leader in marching band)
NHS

2 glowing teacher recommendations, plus 1 counselor rec which I haven't read but the counselor likes me a lot, so excellent would be safe to say.

My essay... erm, it's one of the better ones I've written, but lets go with 'good' just because I don't really know.

When I lay it out like this, I like my chances, but everyone needs an ego boost every now and then... plus I need whatever critiques you guys might offer.

If it helps, I'm from rural Alabama and I'm planning to visit Columbia in February (maybe that'll show a real desire to get there to them, who knows).

There's definitely no questioning of your super-stellar stats...But if you want a straight-forward feedback, I'll tell you to look at the rejected stats of people who went ED to the college a few weeks ago. Despite your top stats (which are similar to a good number of applicants, you might need (or you might already have) an important hook that's going to give you the edge.

One note: ESSAY plays a HUGE (I can't stress this enough) part in admissions (at least for EDers)...I don't know other people's opinion on this but I believe the essay is probably the "make or break" deciding factor in the process.

Overall, I say you have a very reasonable chance since you already surpassed beyond the average "stats", now you need to distinguish yourself. I think coming from rural Alabama definitely helps somewhat.

I think my essay is successful at being me and at being well-written. I'm handing it around to a few people to see if they agree. Would you might checking it out?

yeah i think delfire is right...your stats are pretty amazinggg!! But this yr Columbia has gotten XTREMELY competitve. Some are comparing it to Harvard and Princeton! So, be sure your essay is good and you'll be good!
