Is the ability to read quickly a sign of intelligence?
How u guys tried any of those light speed reading programs?

nah man, its not pure speed that matters. Its the ability to process and retain information coupled with speed that is extra advantageous. However, it doesn't necessarily point to increased intelligence. I know plenty of retards who blow through books and can't recall anything.

ANd those light speed reading programs are generally BS, much like the Mega Math programs LOL

i'm a fast reader, and i consider myself fairly intelligent. i do not believe the two are related. it's a convenient skill to have, but not enough to do a program for.

about 3min/page... yeah I'm a slow reader.. really slow..

This thread reminds me of a time in 2nd grade. It was reading time, and I was sitting in a group with my teacher, and she made everyone read a page of a story. When I read the page, I must have read it really fast cuz she made me re-read it 3 times until I slowed down. I don't know if that is a good thing, cuz in 2nd grade they're trying to teach you to read well, so I don't see why it woulda been a problem if I read a little faster than anyone else. I was obsessed with books until I got to middle school. Which is kinda sad..

I remember when it was like really cool to read fast. Now no one cares.

Sarorah, you aren't talking to me, what's going on?

i do agree the reading really fast doesnt make you cool, but it is a really important skill to have. When someone reads at a slow rate they are at a severe disadvantage. Are there any suggestions you fast readers out there have to share with us. Any try EyeQ?

utop123 -- it's not something i've worked on; i just do. i learned to read at a young age (three), and i do a lot of reading generally, so i guess it's just practice.

reading programs are the worst things i've ever heard of. what an unnatural, sh***y way to learn to read..

here's the best way to learn to read faster: read for fun, with a few ideas in the back of your mind. you want to remember not to re-read lines - if you are, you're obviously reading faster than you're comprending. i feel it's best to actually get into the story.. forget the lines, and just begin to evoke images.

it's basically experience; it has nothing to do with intelligence.

to become a fast reader..u just gotta read a lot..In debate you have to read reallly quickly to get enough crap in within 8 minutes..debate helped me out a lot with the verbal section of the SATs because I was able to read quickly and understand what i was reading....

I read freakishly fast! I read the most recent Harry Potter book in 4 hours.

It depends whether I'm interested in the material/content presented in the book and/or I'm focused at the time. For a book I enjoy (Harry Potter, Da Vinci Code), 3 to 4 hours are good enough to complete the book. On average, 1.5 to 2 minutes per page.

lol reading hp in 4 hours is like...4 pages a minute. were you so very entranced by that book or just trying to plow ahead to finally be done with it? :p

I know a kid that reads real fast. A page takes him 25-30 secs. He did 3 AP english multiple choice sections in one hour and had a 80% average on each.

That is fast!

so all these programs about photo-reading are bogus?

There are some debaters I know of who literally glance (1 to 2 seconds) at a page and are able to retain 50% of the knowledge contained in that page. These debaters usually speed read during debate rounds, meaning that they read really, really fast. This technique has trained their eyes to read fast and for some, to be able to glance at a page and understand it - or so I'm told.

WOW, you guys can read books in a few hours? It takes me a lonnng time.

I don't think being smart makes you a faster reader. It must be from practice.

its incredible to see kids that finish novels at lunch or during class. I realy wonder how they do it?
