Hi I was just curious how fast the internet is in the UCR pentland hills dorm. I will be a freshman starting september.
thanks

about 7-10MB/second

20 MB/sec if you can find a server fast enough

No torrents tho, you’ll have to find a direct download provider for warez >_>

What do you mean by no torrents?!
So I cant download using bitlord?
What other restrictions are there?

dorm internet is the bessssssssssssst.

Well, normally you’d have to have router access in order to setup a static IP and all that… obviously that’s impossible to get here at Riverside - My friend did use torrents here at the dorms but he got something like 1 KB/sec, it was pathetic lol

Everyone I knew switched to direct download providers, so that they didn’t use P2P networks at all. (or just didn’t download)

I myself used astraweb (Usenet), while there are other ways too
It’s not free though, something like 10-15 dollars a month for unlimited downloads from a database

So yeah, no pirate bay or utorrent or bitorrent, etc

There’s also the concern that if you use a client that’s too transparent, the peeps over at Riverside who manage internet connections might catch you - which means you’d be getting mail from the RIAA at some point

But don’t worry too much, some people usually found a way around all of this, and no one really ever gets caught lol

is there a DC++ network at Rside because i know other schools have it.

Youre scaring me haha
So basically download speeds about 1,000k/s
But I cant really download anything thats not from a database, and if I do i can get fined or ticketed?
ughhh

Well, the whole catching thing is really based on rumors - apparently what most people are caught because of include - they’re somehow downloading like 10 GB of files, and because the files they’re downloading have the title of what they’re downloading - making it easy to know what you’re doing

However, I have not seen ONE person get caught yet, so don’t be afraid lol

Also, it’s not that you can only get from databases, it’s just that you can’t use torrents, only direct downloads from a server

What about rapidshare? Most games are like 7gb, so its dangerous to download games/movies? ughh
So about how fast will my internet be if i connect via ethernet cable.

I lived in Lothian last year but visited Pentland and the internet is pretty good. Wifi for pentland can vary by location and time you are on. At the same time the ethernet cable works well and is quick and reliable as long as the cord isn’t completely broken or messed up. While I shouldn’t be saying this, last year I used mediafire and megaupload mostly and had no problem downloading movies, songs, and music. DO avoid torrnets though.

what abotu limewire?

i am doomed

Rapidshare is fine, one of my friends used it

(we all went download crazy in the first few weeks, he downloaded like 40 GB in a day)

So is there no DC++ then?

You just said its not allowed to download any games/music
ughh
