How fast is the Internet?

<p>Yeah well as the title of thread says, how fast is the wireless internet connection that you actually get on your laptop? What sort of download speeds do you get?</p>

<p>And is this internet available in every part of the campus or only in the classrooms and the units?</p>

<p>as in units, if you mean dorms, i don't think you get wireless connection. i heard that wireless is available in the buildings but not in most of the green areas.</p>

<p>Let's just say that there's enough bandwidth running through the campus network that either your computer or the server you connect to is the bottleneck....and this is only CNS, separate from EECS.</p>

<p>There's also a connection to Internet2.</p>

<p>"CNS provides data and voice network services to the wall jack for the entire Berkeley campus, approximately 25,000 phones, more than 2,500 servers and 46,000 network connections using 120 routers. The backbone is physically and logically redundant, interconnected by Ethernet links running at 10Gbps. The network is also connected in redundant fashion to the greater Internet (including research and education networks) with more than 6Gbps of total capacity. <p>IT'S PRETTY DAMN FAST.</p>

<p>Campus wireless (called AirBears) is slow and unreliable. It's gotten better, but sometimes I'll sit in Soda Hall, try to connect to the network, and be unable to.</p>

<p>The wired connections are ridiculous. 30+Mbps from your dorm room. So yeah, plug in if you want to download anything. For browsing, AirBears is okay.</p>

<p>You're computers aren't fast enough to utilize that much bandwidth, not even 100 mbps.</p>

<p>Not to mention your home connections will not exceed 8mbps to the outside internet. Unless you have FIOS which is somwhere at 25mbps and they just started rolling out 100mbps.</p>

<p>The main home solution of getting more than your standard 54mbps on wireless is using unapproved wireless routers that actually cause a lot of interference with everyone else.</p>
