I intended to plan to a few schools early , both through action and decision. However since a few of my choices only have early decision, I wanted to know if I applied regular to those colleges before nov 1 would I get a response? I plan to apply to colleges in two rounds: one in the fall, and if I don't get in, then apply in the winter then find out in the spring. I just want to know if I applied through regular decision to some schools before the early decision deadline would I get the results back in time before, say January ?

If you apply RD, no matter when you submit your application, you will not receive your decision until all RD decisions come out (usually March/April). If you apply ED, you will receive your response usually in December. If you are not accepted, you will not be allowed to apply again for RD in the same year.

It depends on the school. Policies vary.

Even if you apply early, there’s a good chance you’ll get deferred to RD. Just send out the apps to all your schools instead of being lazy with them. You want to have as many acceptances in the mail as possible, since you’ll be able to compare FA offers.
