How fluent do we have to be?

I know there were several threads about this, but how "fluent" do we have to be to be able to put down foreign languages we speak/write/read? For instance, I haven't taken any Chinese language courses in my high school but I know Chinese because I've been studying it outside the class, either by tutor or sometimes by myself. So I think I won't have problem living in China but I don't regard myself as fluent as "native" speakers. Like I'd have some difficulty reading high level of Chinese literature.

Should I put it or not?

Well, I already did, So like Chinese(S,R,W) and submitted it so I guess that doesn't leave me many options. How does Harvard adcom measure this stuff? Does this affect admission at all, by any chance?

Anyone? I'm really unsure about this

They don't specify. I would go with what you had.

Trust me....don't worry about it...geez

i truly don't think that section matters UNLESS you are like one of those super multilingual people who speak, write, and read 6 languages.

as for fluentness, let your heart guide you (whoa...). if you don't feel guilty putting down whatever, you are fine

um yeah i put down 3, one in which i am fully fluent, spanish in which i can definetly communicate in but w/ some mistakes of course and for french i put "basic french" b/c i have a hard time speaking and writing but i can understand and read some.
