I’ve heard that BU is very accepting of the gay community, but I want to know what kind of activities are available for the gay students at BU. Is there a resource center? How many members are in the gay student organization Spectrum? Does the university host any gay events? How accessible are other colleges in Boston, the gay areas in Boston, and gay clubs? Basically, is there a fun lifestyle available for gay youth at BU?

Fiveaces,
I don't know about BU gay organizations,
but in Boston there is a neighborhood called the South End with a gay community and several gay establishments (restaurants, etc) good food, a very pretty part of Boston,
that's basically all I know.

If you also look into NYU,
it's located in Greenwich village which is also at the heart of the gay community in New York.

I don't have exact numbers for you but i know that spectrum is reasonably active on campus. In general there is a lot of support and acceptance here - more than anywhere else I've been. I think it's really great. Spectrum sponsers a number of events through the year. i would suggest looking up the contact person on the activities website www.bu.edu/sao and see what they can tell you specifically.

Other colleges are very accessible. There are no "gay areas" in Boston because gay and lesbian people live all over and the city is "friendly." There are many clubs with gay and lesbian nights, etc. BU is in the center of the city and on the T so everything is pretty much available.

And for what it's worth, Massachusetts is probably the most liberal state ever.

Being gay, I can say that it is very accepting. As for organized stuff... it is there if you want it. I hear Spectrum is active, but have never been to a meeting (although I did go to their reception at the beginning of the year). Also an option is the city-wide gay fraternity, Delta Lambda Phi (of which I am a brother). Furthermore, there is Embassy for clubbing (although you should be advised that for most of Boston you have to be 19 to go clubbing). There is a large gay population at BU (most straight girls complain about how there aren't any boys... and that the ones who are here are gay... don't really feel this claim is founded since I'm currently single... LOL). If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me (jthielen@bu.edu) or IM me (waterbuoy2006 for aim, jacobthielen@hotmail.com for msn). Hope that helps!
