just wondering.

Depends on your EFC, grades/SAT scores, and residency.

Do they give lots of merit aid?

I will tell you this about UCONN, if one of your parents loses a job, it is not a special circumstance, so you will NOT receive any more aid. A job loss to UCONN is a special circumstance if your parents divorce or one of them dies! I know this from personal experience, due to a job loss when we had a child at UCONN.

If you have the stats to get into the Honors Program at UCONN, then merit aid will be forthcoming. It seems to be very competitive lately and harder to get accepted.

Merit aid is, again, tied to residency, believe it or not. Merit aid is given to top students, and loans are given to those that need them.

They gave me $4,200 a year in free money. ACT was 30; GPA was 3.67. Resident of Texas.

I spoke to a dad we know whose daughter goes to Mizzou and will graduate in December. He said that after her first year there, they removed her from their income taxes as a dependent and made her an independent student with Missouri residence. That gave her instate tuition for the rest of her education there and saved them far more than the tax deduction would. My parents will consider this for me at UConn.

In order to be considered a dependent, you need to have a certain minimum income. Keep this in mind when considering this ^ option.
