How Generous or (not) is Tulane w/FA?

Can anyone give me an idea of what kind of FA package to expect from Tulane. I know about the no-loan tuition and fees program (for which we will qualify) but that still leaves a fair amount of dollars on the table. According to college board, Tulane's need based aid is based on academics and I'm not sure how that would work. The only thing showing right now on son's FA portal is his scholarship, but no need-based or anything about the no-loan tuition award.

I'm guessing that the scholarship will be applied to the no-loan tuition thing, but what about his federal aid (ie: Pell or SEOG). Does Tulane usually apply apply all free money to the no-loan tuition award if a student qualifies and then fill the other need with loans? That's a fair amount of loans for a high-need family, so I'm trying to get an idea of whether I can tell son he can realistically expect to be able to attend.

Both FAFSA & Profile were filed on-time and the portal reflects them. The only requirements not satisfied are the Tax return, W2 and verification form and the portal specifically states that those will not prevent an incoming freshman from receiving an aid package and I called this morning to confirm this. I was told that yes, aid would still be packaged even with those forms showing unsatisfied and that if I had them ready to go, I could go ahead and send them in but there was no rush. (I asked if they would prefer them to be held till a later date since I knew they were overwhelmed with paperwork and he said, send them in, they're already overwhelmed so at this point a little more paperwork was not a big deal, lol, at least he had a sense of humor about it).

He said they were processing packages as fast as they could and that would continue through March, their goal is to get them out sooner rather than later, but I'm finding in most cases the first or even second anticipated date given, is not being met. (we've had one package earlier than stated, but I'm guessing that aid applications are up just like enrollment applications have been). We're one of those families that can't commit until we seen offers so we've got a two-pronged wait here, first for admittance and then for aid.

Anybody been through this before and have some idea about what to expect? Thanks in advance.

My daughter is a freshman at Tulane and we found FA to be extremely generous. The only other school she applied for financial aid was Clemson. All she got from them was loans. Tulane gave her a generous need based scholarship plus loans and work study. Good luck I hope you get a similar package.

The merit scholarship (if that is what you are referring to as already up online in Gibson) will be deducted from the estimation of actual need, which is based more or less on the Institutional EFC methodology-that said, in our case, my daughter’s need-based award was roughly two thirds scholarship and the rest in loans (Stafford and Perkins) and federal work-study.

Dod - How did that stack up against other packages she got, if there were any?

Fallen: substantially better than Fordham…I’d say relatively generous then. She might have done a bit better with the schools that boast 100% need-based aid but she had no interest in the elite small LA colleges she had visited…(Very much wants a mid size undergraduate school in a city–Tulane was her first choice).

Thanks. Interesting.

Son received his FA package a few days ago, despite all my worries it was very generous. Puts Tulane right up near the top of the list, so I’m in the process of planning a trip down for Destination Tulane. We’ll have to go the last week, due to son’s other obligations, so we’ll be cutting it close, but I’m hoping son will love it.

Very good! Thanks for the update.
