How good are my chances?

Hi, I am going into the 11th grade once school starts back up. I am just curious if I still have a good chance to go to an elite college? My Freshman year I was absent A LOT, and I didn't join any clubs, and also I failed Algebra. My Sophomore year was a little better, but I still was absent a little too much, and my grades weren't that good, but I did join a club. I was just wondering...if I get good grades and have a good attendence record what do you think my chances are getting into maybe an elite college? My brother thinks I still have a good chance, but I am not so sure. I plan on taking the ACT my Junior year. I dunno when I should start studying for it. Some people tell me to start now, and others tell me to just go on some sites and skim a few questions. What score is considered good if I want to go to an elite school? Sorry for all the questions, I just need to know. :--)

Danielle

i took my practice ACT freshman year and got an 18 which isnt that bad. the ACT isnt that hard. im in the same boat as you. i did bad freshman year and failed algebra and my grades were a little better sophmore year but...im also going into my junior year and i have to do really good this year. atleast that is what people have told me from this site. junior year is what alot of colleges look at so just make sure this year is amazing!
<3ohio love

oh and let me know if you need anthing else. maybe we can actually help eachother this year...just send me a message if your game.

Failed Algebra, ouch!

What is your definition of 'elite'?

As in Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke, Stanford. LOL

There are thousands of people applying to those schools who are damn near academically flawless. It's really tough. lol

If you can find a cure for cancer, you're in. :P

lol, I guess I should just stick to OSU and what not...lol

It's not bad to apply to a few Ivies - just don't set yourself up for disappointment.

I know that I probably won't get into Princeton or Cornell, but I'll apply to them anyway. You never know.

If you want in to an "elite" school, you'll need an ACT of at least 32.

(Yes I realize that's high on some schools 50% range, but with an F in any subject it will be difficult enough as it is to get in).

You can pretty much forget Ivies. It may sound harsh, but you'd be better off saving the application fee. There are plenty of students who have never gotten lower than an A- since kindergarten, and they still get rejected from Ivies. Failing a class freshman year will not bode well with adcoms.

why the hell were you "absent too much"? you joined "a club" in sophomore year but still didn't do too well academically...forget about going to an elite college. you don't get in because you have a "good attendance record"

wow you make me laugh.

to the OP: browse CC a lot more and give some more numerical descriptions! As of now, I don't see much chance! details would be appreciated. :)

Thanks everyone for not being rude....unlike one person on here ahem anyways, does anyone know if University of Kentucky is good? I want to become a Veterinarian and yeah....

You can go to a good school but not a elite school lol

UK is the best school in kentucky i think
it's not that great though
nowhere near ivy league
its like your average state school, except like UCBerkeley or UCLA

Some people woke up on the wrong sides of their beds.

Grades aren't exactly everything. An F will obviously not look good, but there are alot other things they consider like extracurriculars, awards, etc. They are so random with admissions anyway.

To the OP: just curious, but why were you absent so much?

Sure grades aren't everything but the OP has no extracurriculars..."one club" in sophomore year is not going to impress admissions officers at elite colleges. Also, judging by the OP's grades i'm pretty sure the standardized test scores are going to be low as well.

To the OP:

If you work really, really, and I mean super-extra hard, yes, you might still have a chance. However, it is very difficult.

This is Imporant though:

It doesn't matter if you've been a straight As student since Kindergarten. Do you think colleges accept you as a "prize"? As in: "Awww since little Johnny has been getting all As forever we must simply reward with an acceptance letter to Harvard."

No. Colleges look out for themselves. They wanted talented kids period. Little Johnny would stand no chance if compared with a guy who maybe got Ds or Cs freshman year but suddenly experience a huge transformation, raised 25 grand for his class, started an organization, etc.

Point is- colleges don't accept you as a "reward". They are looking out for talent. If you can use the best of your potential and show the very, very best of you, they'd definetely take a look at you. Remember that everything is possible. And that Your very own father owns those schools. If its for the best of you to get in, then you will. If something better is awaiting for you somewhere else, then you won't. But just work to the very best of your ability, remember everything is possible, you have huge potential, and know that everything is in God's hands. He is the lord and master of the universe and that if something is good for you, he'll make it happen. If he doesn't, maybe it'd seem like a dissapointment at first, but trust me, he has much better things saved for you somewhere else.

-haha can you stop preaching? seriously "he is the lord and master of the universe"...
