Hi everyone

This is my first post here. I am an international student with a year to go before I graduate. I plan to apply to the US for my Masters in International Relations. I have a cgpa of 2.75. What sort of universities will I be able to get into? I do not aim for the top universities anyway because I will not be able to afford them. Also, what would be a good GRE score for me?

Really appreciate your replies. Thanks folks!

Bump!
I am aiming for:
Clark Atlanta University
Kean University
Auburn University Montgomery
Eastern Illinois University
Villanova University
University of Masachussetts Amhurst

Please chance me. I will chance back.

People arn’t responding because you didn’t provide enough information. test scores, ecs, etc.

Country
Test Scores
Capability in ESL
Undergraduate school and major
college ECs

Your gpa is meaningless without the above.

Why would this be worth coming to the US for? None of these schools are known in most countries, what do you expect one of these schools to help you do?

I am a Southeast Asian residing in Bangladesh. I have taken O levels and A levels after which I joined the best private university in my country. I am currently in my last year before I finish my BBA. My major is Marketing (pretty generic in this country). First year cgpa was 3.4, then my parents went through a bitter divorce and my cgpa fell. Also, doing BBA was never my intention, I wanted to get a degree in Accounting and Finance. Since none of the universities here offer anything else other than BBA and some generic degrees, I was left with no choice. I just wanted to get over with this and I guess that’s why my cgpa is 2.86 right now.

Anyway, during my third year I did a ged course in International Relations. I just loved it and two of my three A’s are from the international relations courses. I wanted to change my major to International Relations but sadly we do not have a major for that here. So, I had to stick with this marketing major which I hate. I got a year left and I’m sure I can pull my cgpa to 2.9 by the time I graduate if I give it my everything. Now my dream is to get a Masters in International Relations from the US and then pursue a PHD. Once studying my dream subject I’m sure I’ll pass masters with really good cgpa which will enable me to apply to good phd schools. Well, that’s what my plan is. I just want to learn more about this subject and study a lot. I know there aren’t much job opportunities for IR graduates here in Bangladesh and I’m fine with that. I’ll probably come back and teach.

Well, I will be taking TOEFL this month. I’ve always been very good in english so I’m sure I’ll ace that. I have started preparing for my GRE, now this is where I need help. Provided my dismal cgpa, what should I aim for in my GRE? I will have very good recommendation letters from my professors. One of them was my IR teacher in university and I got A’s in both. He is the one guiding me and I’ll get stellar recommendations from him. I have worked in a NGO for two months. I will work in two more before I graduate.

Now I would like to apply to some state universities as well. Which ones would be in my reach? I am thinking about

University of Illinois, Chicago
Ohio State University
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
University of Arizona
Arizona State University
Washington State University, Pullman
Kean University
Auburn University Montgomery
Eastern Illinois University
Villanova University

What are my chances with these? How much in GRE and TOEFL would be a good score for me to get accepted here? Any suggestions of where else I could apply for IR? I know these universities aren’t really the best but all I need is to get a Masters with good cgpa so I can apply for PHD in a good university.

If you have managed to come this far, I must say I’m impressed! Thanks a lot for any insight/suggestions/cruel words. I do not want sugarcoated encouragement. Thanks again.

I would do some serious research. Good grades in a masters program doesn’t guarantee you’ll get into a PhD program, especially with funding. What is your budget for the masters program, that needs to dictate where you apply.

Thanks so much for the reply Redroses. My IR professor told me I can get into good universities for PHD with good cgpa. He studied in UK and goes around doing a lot of fellowships and stuff. Anyway my budget is 80000 us dollars. I can go a bit higher but I would rather save some incase I need some money for my PHD. I will not be applying for any kinds of financial loans or sholarships. I do not want to spend all my money for masters, hence I’m aiming low and cheap. What do you suggest?

Also, I am looking at
University at Buffalo, SUNY
University at Albany, SUNY
University at Stony Brook, SUNY

How do they look?

Bump! Any comments please?
