I recently took the June 2010 SAT Subject Tests in Chemistry and Math II. My scores were: Chemistry - 730 and Math II - 800. I aspire to major in Chemical Engineering, and my top choices for schools are Georgia Tech and Cornell. How will they look upon these scores?

Very decent scores. Keep in mind, however, that SAT II’s only matter so much. In reality they are only used to reinforce the primary standardized test score (SAT and ACT), and to measure your ability to succeed in a particular niche, in your case engineering. I would say anything above 700 is suitable for Cornell, preferably 750, and 650 for GT.

Well, are these scores decent, good, or very good? And is “suitable” going to be advantageous for my application as a whole?

Oh god, did you really just ask if an 800 is good enough?
730 Chemistry is fine.

@Chicago701 I think OP meant the 730/800 combination as opposed to the 730 and 800 individually.
Tom94368, for Cornell I think a 750+ on chem would be preferable but with the 800 math and everything, I don’t think it’s worth wasting so much time for 20 more points. I doubt that those 20 pts will make or break your acceptance.

I called in early and got my AP scores for this year, and I received a “5” on the AP Chemistry exam. Does this compensate for any lacking that I may have in the AP Chemistry Subject Test score?

I would really appreciate one of you guys responding to my last message.

You don’t have anything to compensate for… The 730 on the Chemistry SAT II test is very good. The 5 on AP Chem just strengthens your application. Concentrate on your essays and such and forget about the subject tests. You did just fine. FYI - my son is going to Berkeley in the fall for Undeclared Engineering so I am familiar with what you need to score.

Wow, talk about somewhat of a doppelganger.

I also took Chemistry and Math II in one sitting, and my scores were 730 and 800 respectively. I aspire to major in Chemical Engineering as well. The only thing that sets me apart from you was that my top choice was Berkeley(I got in).

I would retake the chemistry if I were you. But what the hell do i know i got a 670 on it.

I thought I was going to have the same dilemna you were, with 800 Math 2 and 730 ish chem, but I got a 780 somehow. anyway, I think the 5 on the chem shows that you are clearly adept at the subject, so I would not worry about retaking those scores, they look fine.

Thanks for all of the input, guys.

Sagert: Did you speak with any admissions officers regarding your SAT Subject Test scores, and if so, what did they think?

I think the main thing that I am wondering is how significant these scores are to my application as a whole. I am considering retaking Chemistry, and possibly taking U.S. History in addition, but I am an all-“A” student, I have a 2210 on my SAT, and I have solid EC’s; so, how do admissions officers look at SAT Subject Tests in general?

I also took US history(710), so if you take that, we’ll have another thing in common!

No, I didn’t ask my admissions officers about how much weight my subject scores had on my acceptance, lol

Those are definitely good scores. Especially the 800 (well, of course you knew that…). I got pretty similar scores on those tests :)
