How good does the MIT WISE program look?

To me, as a rising senior, this program looks extremely intriguing not only for college, but also just as a great way to experience a top-level university such as MIT. I will definitely be applying, but I am just wondering how good this will look on college apps, not only for MIT, but for any college. Also, for any previous WISE attendees, how was it? Some feedback would be nice. And by the way, I’m talking about the Weekend Immersion in Science and Engineering.

For how good it looks on college apps:

I just took a look at the application, and it does not seem to ask for any proof of merit, such as GPA, test scores, EC lists/experiences, or essays/statements of purpose. With this in mind, the program in and of itself would not appear to be “very impressive” to an adcom just from my reasoning (if someone disagrees, please do post). However, the fact that you are taking the initiative and taking advantage of a (free?) program at a great university is where the merit lies. Also, you may earn brownie points with the MIT adcom if you are interested in MIT (just a speculation). In any case, it may provide you with a cool experience to write about.

If it doesn’t require GPA, test scores, etc. then by itself it won’t look good. Just go there for the experience at MIT. It’s the experience and how you grew from the experience that counts.

Competitive summer programs such as TASP and RSI will help as they are super selective. Yours, just go with the mindset of leaning and not trying to boost your college app.

Well idk how competitive it is but I applied and they actually did require gpa, test scores, grades for all math and science classes, and a short answer response. I mean it’s not something that I expect will stand out on a college app but it does require qualified applicants.

It’s not a game-changer, but it’s a good use of vacation time and if you learn/do something cool, you can write about it in a supplement essay. I’ve heard good things about the program from former students, btw. Seems like fun.

I hope you do not mind me asking, have you received the email with weather or not you have gotten into the program?

It depends but mine attended one program at MIT with average admit rate to MIT was 50% in the past but she got wail instead. But I’m glad she did get a chance to go out of state study somewhere even for a month. How long is WISE? The longer the program the more impact it is.

Well, the program does in fact ask for GPA and test scores and that stuff, but they don’t require transcripts or hard evidence of anything, so there’s that. And no, I haven’t received any info on whether or not I got in yet. Does anyone have any idea when they will release them?

It’s a little too late isn’t it. Most summer programs are nearly done, SEP is only a few weeks away. But check summer programs section of CC.

@DrGoogle @marvin100 The WISE program is not a summer program. I believe the other posters on the thread are talking about MIT’s Weekend Immersion in Science and Engineering. The first weekend starts September 20 and the second starts October 18.

@p3y7on D16 applied, but she hasn’t received an email yet.

I emailed the contact and she said the end of this week and that we would get an email regardless of if we got in or not

It’s a weekend thing then it won’t impact admission. But it’s nice to emerge in Science and engineering to confirm your interest.

Hey guys! I just received my decision email. I got accepted! I will see you guys at MIT in October!

I’m wishing the best for everyone!

Who knows about its benefit for college admissions, but attending the WISE program was an absolutely wonderful eye opener for my son who heretofore, had not even really considered applying to MIT. He had such a fabulous time, that not only did he apply to MIT, but was accepted, and is now entering his senior year there.

He had missed CPW because he was at Princeton’s accepted students weekend (and boy was he miffed with mom-me-for scheduling the Princeton visit at the same time…but he was admitted SCEA to Princeton and they paid for his flight, and we had to schedule that early–who knew??), so the WISE program became even more critical in his decision to attend MIT.

Congrats to those who got in. Hope it will be as much fun for you as it was for my son!
