So I applied ED II to the school because I loved the atmosphere and look of the place when I visited. When I talked to my mom about applying ED II she was all for it so I sent my app in after we read it was possible to back out of an acceptance if the financial aid is insufficient. My mom will be paying the majority of my tuition for my school, but she makes around 30k a year and GWU’s cost is basically double that so we’re a bit worried if I was to be accepted.
How generous are they with financial aid? Thanks a lot!
My D applied RD but don’t think they will give her enough aid. They say on their website they do not meet 100% demonstrated need. I also know they offer full scholarships so there is a shot at that, but I imagine they only offer to the very best students & my D isn’t one of them. I think they might be need aware as well, when looking thru applications. I know AU is need aware, if that school interests you
^^@cloudysmom
You do know that once your D accepts her spot at her ED2 school, she will need to pull her GW and all other apps, so you won’t get to find out how much aid they would give you
@wisteria100 Yes, thanks, I do know. But it seems there is a real chance of not getting enough aid from UR as my ex makes a good bit & while he won’t help pay a penny, he could ruin aid for us, so I responded to the OP from that viewpoint. Trying to consider where we would focus next…
Hope it works out @cloudysmom. Richmond has a very large endowment for a school of its size and is known to be fairly good with aid.
Thanks @wisteria100 yes that I hope will be our saving grace, but I assume they add my ex husbands income to mine to get a total. I make 1/4 what he makes & he won’t help. Will break my heart to tell her she can’t go to UR if that happens…
So I used the net price calculator on the gw website. Does anyone know if that is an accurate source?
Hello! Update from me that I got in today :). They’re giving me 66k in scholarships and loans and the admissions cost was 70k. The net price calculator said mine would be around 22k.
Also how do loans work exactly? I’m the first in my family to go to a college in America so we’re all a bit lost on how this works.
@muogji90 you were awarded scholarships/grants that don’t have to be repaid, and loans that do. You tell the school if you accept your aid (I think you have to accept each individual piece) and then the loans are filed. You don’t have to start paying-back your loans until 6months after graduation when they go into “repayment” as it’s called. Some will accrue interest while you’re at school, however, so your balance will be greater than what you might expect.
Thank you for the information! I read that unsub loans are the ones with interest and subs are the one without?
Correct. The government pays the interest on the sub loans while you’re at school. However, once you graduate, both loans will be accruing interest.
