How good is Irvine for EE?

How good is Irvine for Electrical Engineering?

IS UCSD better than UCI, if so is it a lot better?

How does UCI compare with Cal Poly SLO?

How does UCI compare with CSULB?

considering all these schools but can't decide!

Hi Jinroll,

My first word of advice is visit each campus and find which campuses you can see yourself studying and excelling at down the years. This will truly determine your success!

I’m a recent graduate from the undergraduate EE program at UCI and am currently pursuing an MS/PhD in EE. I can vouch that the UCI EE program is very competitive in industry and academics (I’m not speaking about in-class competition here). It’s a great program that is currently trying to enhance the program by catering to the needs of the students. The executive committee of the program (which I was a part of in the past) has been working hard to better the program in any ways possbile. It is true that UCI’s ranking in EE is not as high as other schools, especially UCSD, but I can assure you rank is not important whatsoever. If it were, then I would not have been able to get into schools like UCLA, USC, CMU, and Cornell for graduate school.

UCSD vs. UCI
The key differences between include the following:
-Broadcom hires heavily from UCI while Qualcomm hires heavily from UCSD. This can be important when finding internships!
-Cisco does not recruit at the fairs at UCI. But Broadcom doesn’t go to UCSD :P.
-UCSD’s amount of research funding is larger than UCI’s right now. Basically, UCSD is a powerhouse in research for EE at the moment.

Otherwise, both programs are great! (Notice how these differences are not very important).

UCI vs. Cal Poly SLO? They’re both great schools. Cal Poly SLO emphasizes a practical curriculum with industry while UCI leans more towards theory and preparation for graduate studies. That’s probably a key difference. Also, UCI offers much more research opportunities (this is assuming real research as opposed to projects like formula 1 hybrid cars).

UCI vs CSULB? I’m not sure. In all honesty, I don’t hear much buzz coming from engineering at CSULB, but I hear it’s decent over there. One of my graduate school classmates at UCLA went to CSULB for his BS =]. He’s a smart guy.

I’m not well versed in the CSU system so my comparisons to CSULB and Cal Poly SLO are lacking.

Good luck deciding! If you have more specific questions, it would help others out in the comparison.

If you want to get a job after getting a BS, it will probably be a better idea to go to cal ply SLO, since the curriculum is more designed for that.
