I was recently admitted to UC Davis through the appeals process as a managerial economics (business) major. I keep hearing that their program isn’t that great, that Berkley or the CSU’s offer a way better program.
It could be true, but, I definitely don’t believe Davis’ business program get you no jobs. So what would be the difference? Also what is EOP , and is it to late to apply for it?
Congrats on your successful appeal! I can’t say anything about the quality of Davis’s managerial economics major, so I hope someone who knows more about it will see your post.
Here’s a link about everything you need to know about EOP: http://success.ucdavis.edu/centers-and-programs/eop/incoming.html
There should have been an option for you to apply to EOP during your application, but apparently if you didn’t fill it out before you can just email someone to get an application. If you can, I’d recommend anyone to apply. I don’t qualify, but my roommate is in EOP, and she got to sign up for classes a whole 2 weeks before I did. I doubt anyone in EOP has trouble signing up for classes, so see if you can take advantage of that.
I would like to know this too since I might apply to that program. From what I heard the major is really general and great for marketing, finance and agriculture and you also have to be involved in internships to get a good job. you should be able to get a good job though. There are a lot of theads on it in CC and Reddit so really look into those and also look up alumni of the program LinkedIn. It is also a much bigger major than regular econ unit wise. From what I researched the program does not have much of an accounting presence. It definitely is not good as Berkley’s but thats because Cal is one of the best public schools for Econ. The CSUs may be better for biz administration but for econ I would say Davis is better but Slo is comparable for econ. Mangerial econ isnt an accredited biiz administration major so keep that in mind. Do not expect a business administration type curriculum but rather an econ curriculm that applies to business. Sorry for the long post and grammar and spelling errors here and there. I hope that helps I have researched a lot on threads and asked my sister that goes to Davis. You would probably get a better response from people in the program though so good luck and congrats on getting into Davis!
You cand take more accounting courses at nearby Community colleges or cal state sacramento through the davis extension I believe so you can still learn accounting and attend Davis.
Congrats!
Stop listening to whoever is telling you Davis isn’t a good school and that their Econ isn’t any good. They have no idea what they are talking about - lend them no credibility as you navigate this decision. Don’t worry about the quality of Cal’s (or CalPoly or CalTech or Harvard or Stanford or Sac State) program since i am guessing you didn’t get in - those doors aren’t open to you so it truly doesn’t matter. There will always be a better/bigger/faster that is just out of reach. You have to make the most of the opportunity you have. Trust me… in 10 years, Davis of Cal on your resume will essentially be the same thing. What you do while you are there makes a lot more impact on recruiters.
That said, the school is HUGE and really competitive. It definitely isn’t for everyone and I don’t know your other options.
Now - the question for you is do you like Davis?
For business specifically, I’ve been told by my counselors at my CC that if we plan on doing business, CSUs are slightly better just because UCs don’t offer an actual business major except UCI & UCB (and I believe UCSD has a business minor). When I took a counseling class to plan out my CC career, the counselor advised business majors to look into CSUs and their business program because they are a little more known. SJSU was greatly suggested as they’re pretty known for business (and it’s a local school bear us). However, that doesn’t mean you should completely avoid UCs though. Go where you want to go because in the end, you can still get into business with Econ. As for Econ specifically at UCD, I’ve actually heard good things about it at UCD. My high school history teacher took both Macro & Microecon and he loved it. I think you’ll be okay if you chose to go to UCD.
UCR also has a business program
If you are into finance or marketing the managerial econ program looks good from the courses provided on the web page. And I hear there are good companies recruiting if you work for it. Davis also just added an accounting minor that will start out this Fall.
