How good is Middlebury?

HI,

I've just learned I'm accepted to Middlebury. Sadly, I'm an international and couldnt make it to preview day so instead I hope to get more info from CC instead. Hopefully some1 can help me?

First, how does the financial aid work? 58950$ is a lot of money and I'm just wondering what does it actually cover? Is it everything, the dorm, the food and even the plane ticket cost included? I received around 30k in aid and I'm still worried about the food cost etc. Plus, they say this is only an estimate and until i accept the offer, I won't get my final FA. Does the final and initial offer change alot?

Also, as the title suggest, how good is Middlebury? I'm interested in economy and humanities, language but I also like sciences etc. Anybody know where the usual graduates end up at and what percentage of students actually go to top ivies for grad school? Is the alumni network as strong as the ivies or top schools etc, and how about job recruitment? I heard they say because Middlebury is in rural Vermont, students don't get the opportunity to meet as much influential ppl and thus is at a big disadvantage compare to city colleges. Note: I am an international student.

Now, the last thing is life at Middlebury. I heard it's illegal to drink before 21, is that stictly the rule? Is drug usage common and what do students normally do? Is there a big mall nearby, karaoke, clubs, what is the life there? Oh, and can an international student travel across states to visit friends etc or are we limited to being trapped at campus? I'm a city boy and I just want a happy four years experience.

Finally, I may not sound like it, but I'm very interested in Midd and looking forward to attending. Thank you for all the response in advance and please give as much info (bad or good) as you like. I know it's very long, I'm sry. Anyway, I wish everyone the best. :D

What other schools are you considering? That might help when crafting a response to your questions.

OK, I’ll bite. I know that the sticker price of $58,950 includes tuition, room and board. That means that your food and the dorm are included. It will not include the cost of travel, nor will it include the cost of your books. The administration will be able to give you some estimates of what other costs to expect.

Middlebury is widely regarded as one of the best Liberal Arts Colleges in the country. That means that when applying to graduate schools it will be held in the highest esteem. It will be viewed as being at least as good as all but a very few schools. Middlebury’s alumni network is among the VERY best in the country. The alumni giving rate is in the top five in the country, meaning that the alumni of Middlebury participate in giving donations to their school at a higher rate than almost every school in the country. They are a tight group of people who regularly return to campus to take part in reunions and homecoming. They also take part in hiring students for internships and jobs following graduation. The alumni network takes part in interviewing applicants every year. If not for the tight alumni network, Middlebury could never interview as many applicants as it does each year.

The argument that “Middlebury is in rural Vermont, students don’t get the opportunity to meet as much influential ppl and thus is at a big disadvantage compare to city colleges” is ridiculous. Middlebury attracts tons of “influential ppl” to its campus every year. Major businesses come to campus each year to recruit graduates for jobs. Additionally, the idea that schools located in cities have an advantage creates the impression that “influential ppl” are just wandering around city campuses, which simply isn’t the case. The Middlebury name will create more opportunities to meet “influential ppl” than another school’s location would.

It is illegal to be in possession of alcohol under the age of 21 in all 50 states. The reality is, you will find underage students drinking in all 50 states. I wouldn’t say drug use is any more or less common at Middlebury than it is on other college campuses throughout the United States. I’m definitely not an authority on this issue, however.

International students are free to travel around all fifty states, you may, first, need to enter Canada to make it to Alaska, however. I’ll let someone else answer the questions about what students do on campus. Good luck. Hope that helps.

(Apparently) THAT good.

@ arcadia - I got into Luther college, NYU and Bowdoin. Also, there is NUS (in singapore) and UCL in UK.

@Urban slaughter, thz for the reply, that really helped. Btw, do you happen to know how easy international students life are, during and after graduation and is there (if i attend) a strong peer pressure for drug usage?

@DqueenDAD - that (apparently) , are u implying it’s not that good as mentioned? and if so, in wat way?

Thanks
